Hi there,

I am recovering from a foot injury and despite being now able to walk, the clutch of my outback is too hard to be able to drive it. I can push hard enough to use it on a very small distance but would not try longer usage.

Is there a way to make it smother?

it's a 99 outback 2.5 :-)

Thanks for your ideas!

I'd say go and see a clutch specialist. A big workshop that puts together their own clutches to customer demands. Because a variety of things can be done to reduce pedal pressure feel: Longer clutch pedal "arm", larger clutch master cyl piston diameter, smaller clutch slave cyl piston diameter.

In the end, the clutch pressure plate is what affects how heavy a clutch feels. So if you can get a workshop to install a clutch pressure plate that requires less force than stock, you'll solve your problem :). It won't be easy, since stock clutches are usually the lightest, but good workshops can make and adapt things to suit your needs. Getting a new clutch made and installed won't be cheap, but the right one will solve your problem. But check with them if the other options might be cheaper or suit you better.

Thanks Tom for your reply. I would have hoped for a cheapo option, but if there is none, that's what it is...
:D

Yeah I wish I had a cheap solution for u. But at the end of the day, it's Physics. Would be good if there was a cheap way to make it possible though.

If you are in se QLD then Jim berry would be the person to consult :)

Or just go harder on the foot rehab and physio.

Another clutch foot injury victim here.

Simplest option is to get a mechanic to fit a longer slave cylinder rod. It means you should not push the clutch to floor
