Installing new cd player and sat nav unit.

Postby Kegalicious » Tue Sep 24, 2013 11:36 am

Hey guys, my cd player won't allow me to insert any cd's and I was thinking of buying one off a wrecker. How hard is it to change or who in Canberra would be my best option to talk to? I was also thinking of getting a sat nav unit, is it a fairly simple switch in to the compartment that is above the unit or is there alot more behind the scenes wiring involved?

To change the HU will require a new facia panel - a JDM one with separate AC controller, double DIN hole - many threads on this . The model will depend on your current AC - single zone or double. You dont say what model year your car is, and its relevant. There are MANY great HU around, either single or double DIN size, including Sat navs. to do this swap you will need a Suby wiring adapter, which are made by Aerpro - look up on web, Autobarn etc. Bit more complicated if you have a Mcintoss head unit - these need an amp before the speakers, so you need a fairly special connector, or a new cable altogether. Do some research here, and on legacygt.org.

JP- I think OP is looking at replacing his stock HU with same for same, not aftermarket. Also after a sat nav unit that fits in the stock cubby hole.

To answer your question: same for same headunit replacement is a 15min job with minimal tools and skills required. As for the sat nav- well best having a search around here. There's a bit of wiring involved plus the kit is quite expensive for what you really get out of it.

There's a few threads about the sat nav on here that have all the info you need. Can't link then atm cos I'm not on the computer.

The best (subject to personal opinion) is go with what JP described and go fully aftermarket with satnav built into the HU. At the end of the day it comes down to $$$.

To give you an idea of starting costs for replacing whole system with new gear, the JDM double din facia with separate AC controls is at least $400 new - see avojapan or japanparts. I replaced my Mcintoss soon after getting the car - $400 for the new facia, $600 for JVC DV6105 (plays dvd movies or 4.6gb of MP3, line out or speaker outs, graphic equalizer, video out, cooling fan, aux in, aux out, ipod adapter capable etc), $50 for sundry wiring adapter, cables to speakers. MUCH MUCH (IMHO) better sound than original - havent even hooked up the sub yet.
Once you have the facia adapter, you can fit pretty much anything.

Sorry guys havent been on in a while.
I have a 2007 and yeah its the mcintosh.
I was thinking of just swapping factory for factory just so I can use cd's, everything else works fine.
Only concern for aftermarket is will it look clean like it does now? As in will all the other controls and dials be flush with a new system that may not line up correctly???
Cheers. :)
