Kartboy Short Shift Install Issue 6MT 3.0RB

Postby conkyd » Mon May 27, 2013 12:04 pm

Hi guys,
Yesterday I installed a kartboy short shift kit into my 3.0RB MY07. The bushings front and rear went fine as did the actual shifter, however the reverse lockout is on all the time. Before removing the split pin holding it, I locked out the little cam lever on the passenger side of the gearbox which releases the tension. Installed the new shifter and the lockout cable, however even after removing the lockout on the cam underneath the lockout switch stays up. The spring that sits under the lockout switch is pushing it up, but it is as if there isn't enough tension on the cable to pull it back down.
I have checked the pics and instructions on Cobb and other forums, and all looks correct. The only difference is that the collar for the shift boot sits on the shifter as there are not holes to screw it in (different to the wrx).

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks.

Best get the car back on stands and see:
What happens when you push the reverse lockout puller back to its resting spot?
Did you try wiggling the lockout cam from under the car?
Did you over tighten the ziptie on the shifter or linkage or under the car?
Is the cable bent at too high a curve where you took up some slack?
Is the lack of screws causing misalignment of the lockout assy?

It springs back up to fully engaged.

Did you try wiggling the lockout cam from under the car?
The lockout cam moves and I can lock it out using a small allen key through it. This provides extra length on the cable at the shifter allowing me to get the pin in and out.

Did you over tighten the ziptie on the shifter or linkage or under the car?
With ziptie removed the outer sheath drops out of the shifter. no change though in the cable. Grabbing the outer sheath and pulling down brings the lockout down, but returns up when you let go.

Is the cable bent at too high a curve where you took up some slack?
Don't think so.

Is the lack of screws causing misalignment of the lockout assy?
The lockout assembly slides in and out of the shift boot if you push it down.

My thinking is that the difference is caused by the shorter shifter, and the cable length is now too long.

Since the cable outer is a fixed length (to suit the cable) it shouldnt be an issue.
I'd check to see if its seated properly in its stoppers at both ends though.

I had to use an extra ziptie and bend or loop in the cable to keep the cable out of the prop shaft.
Did bosco's last week but it seemed quite different even though same year and 6mt...

I'll pull up the boots and grab a snap tonight.

Thanks. I think I might have to get in an adjust the cable in it hanger. The cable goes no where near the prop shaft on my car and the standard tie keeps it in a good spot.

So sent the car to a Subaru specialist in frustration. He has advised the cable is too long for the shifter.
Has anyone else had this? Is it possible to get a shorter cable?

If the ends are just swagged on you can cut it then take it to a ships chandler think there are 3 in Canberra + the yacht club . They will be able to fit another end or even make up a new one .

The lower the lever the more slack needs taking up.
Thus I'm using an extra zip tie and I flipped the cable up over a stay rod or heat shield under the car.
Just need to keep the cable run smooth.

Thanks guys.
I thought about pulling it further under the car, and creating slack - but wouldn't the issue will remain in that the outer sheath length is fine, it is the inner? Looks like I am off to the Yacht club!

The inner (cable) is the right length for the outer (effectively the cable guide)

Unless for some reason the shifter has different geometry compared to every other 6 speed shifter.
Or you've left something out or in the wrong order...

Has the cable jumped out of the guide/stopper at the gearbox end?
If so the outer would slide to that end of the cable, making the inner too long/no tension.

Have you researched similar cable length/cable stopper issues with the Kartboy shifter?

What Benny said, i can't see the amount you've lowered the shifter by effecting the length of the inner enough to cause this issue. Have you checked the length of the whole cable?

My guess is if the cable itself is too long compared to the outer, the kartboy shifter is not legacy 6mt compatible...
If so I'd add a small section of eg brass pipe or cable outer that's big enough to slip over the cable end and small enough to fit the shifter stopper ;)

Thought it may be worth sharing these two snaps of what i had to do to stop the lock out cable coming into contact with the prop shaft.

You can see in the first picture what damage the rubbing caused and how it cleaned a strip of the prop shaft. Cute huh.

Nice pics! So the cable length is adjustable lol ;)
Looks like you could take up at least half an inch if required...

Did you manage to fix this? I'm about to install a cobb short shifter this weekend and want to make sure I've got all bases covered.

It's not that hard is it?

BigBadBenny can you post a pic of what you mean by
