Motor ID??

I am wondering what ways there are to positively ID which variant and the year of the 2.0T motor in my 1990 Liberty. Ill put some pics up on Monday, all I know is it has a top mount intercooler and is out of a WRX. I'm guessing early 90s, I think it is an EJ20G but just want to know the year so I can find out which parts are compatible. Thanks.

I know for my car, on the underside of the oil cap it has the build date of the engine. Of course for a 23 year old car you might not have the original oil cap! Also they probably weren't doing that back in 1990 with the engine build date on oil cap.

im pretty sure its an EJ20G from a WRX 92 - 96 model. I'll check under oil cap tomorrow when I pick her up from the mechanic.

Why the fuck would they put a date on an oil cap for when an oil cap was made with it's month and year?
It is to do with when the ENGINE was built, which differs from when the CAR was built.
if you were to check the build date plate on the car it will be many months after the oil cap date.

If I purchased a NEW oil cap it would just have a production date the cap was made this cap will fit many models over several years so the cap date has noting to do with engine manufactured date . Have a look on your air filter it will also have a code or manufactured date

If they have a re run on oil caps it will also have the production date the cap was made . Do you think they make caps every week or 1000s in one go ,

I specifically said in the first post I made here that due to his car being 23 years old he probably didn't even have the original oil cap.

Are you saying that some little fairy(you) comes in and replaces every single oil cap on MY07+ Liberty cars (for which I specifically said I could only vouch for) for no reason other than to fuck with the customer?
I said that the CAR from stock comes with an engine which has an OIL CAP which is specifically dated to when that ENGINE (not car) was built.
Sure if you sell it to some car dealership they probably have some insane system of oil cap switching cause car dealerships are bullshit. Oh did you buy your car from a dealership? Oh well I guess that isn't so bad as long as you didn't also take it to MRT.

Yeah cool thanks Buddah. My point still stands. Engine build date is on the oil cap from factory. I don't give a shit if the oil cap has been changed at a later date, that is it's purpose FROM FACTORY.

Aside from the main argument, I would say most 23 year old cars would still have their original oil cap.

Aside from people who like to modify their car to add an arguably more awesome oil cap, or people who are stupid or accident prone and lose or break their original one I wouldn't think many other people would ever consider replacing their oil cap.

Get the engine serial number, it'll be at the back of the engine near the bellhousing, its a flat spot.

Would be better if you had the VIN of the vehicle it came out of tho....
