You're opinions.

I just bought a Lib with 301,000kms on the clock with no service history on paper or log books. I know the timing belt has to be replaced every 100,000 kms or so but I don't know the condition of the current one.
Is there any sign it gives you that its on the way out? or should I just pay out the $500 that my mechanic is going to charge me to pull the front off and just look at it and see what kind of condition it is in. Crazy I think forking out the 500, I don't really know how to do it myself. :angry2:

Do you still have the previous owners contact details ? if so obviously the best way would be to give them a buzz and ask when it was changed last. $500 just to inspect the belt seems very pricey, if its going to cost you that amount you might as well get them to change it anyway, at least then you know its done

You have to pull the front off to inspect so I suggest just get it changed while it's there cause once it snaps it will cost you shit loads more to fix it.

Best rule I use is... if in doubt go with new.

on a Gen1 it's easy enough to remove one or the timing belt covers, drivers side most likely the easier one
and you can inspect the belt.
you'll see if it's new or old. older belts tend to be able to see where the ribs are from the back (flat) side of the belt.
if in doubt change it anyway

Nah I have no contact details at all. I picked it up for $1000 off ebay, off a random and doing it up myself bit by bit. No history on it.

Thanks for you're help guys, I'll just get a new one put on for the best possible price. Do you guys know anyone decent in Sydney who are not too overboard and fair??

Cheers
