Display Clock removal

Postby DizZee » Thu Sep 13, 2012 5:26 pm

Hey!

Sorry if this has been answered before, I did a search but turned up nothing.

Was wondering how I remove the display clock from a 2004 Liberty.

Thanks!

i found some info on this a while back when mine was playing up, but i cant dig it up again.

its very easy though, get a flat head screw driver and a cloth, wedge it in gently with a cloth (so no marks) on each side and simply pop it out.

you just need to un-clip 2 plugs (storage compartment light on top and the display connection on the bottom) and its done.

troubles with the display?

I have the same problem, the clock display doesn't work. Occasionally it turns on for a little bit and then turns off again, its a common problem isn't it? Dodgy solder jobs on the back?

yeah very common. if you have very basic solder skills your can easily fix this issue. just a matter of re-soldering a particular component on the circuit board.

i did this a few months back and its been perfect ever since.

This seems to be the most conclusive thread I found after a quick search, I was bought to it through a search on here FYI, the writeup was just held on the members home forum.

That's where I got the link from  The writeup on the other site seemed more conclusive as mentioned

its tricky to get to (need to un-solder half of the clock display panel), but if you attack the part ive circled, that fixed mine right up !

Mad shut out to all the original posters above. 6 Years later and the knowledge dropped still helps! Soldered the R4 and working fine on re-install, time will tell. Seems the bright button is now no longer working but I probably butchered the board a bit when i soldered it.
My advice, just dollop a bit of solder on the R4 at each end, don't try and reheat the factory solder, it will just fall off and be a pain in the ass to get back on.
And anyone searching to get the clock out.. you need to remove the whole air vent section. 3 clips at the top and whole unit will come out.. use tools or the butter knife with rag that has been suggested somewhere.
Again, thanks to all. Saved me a $100 AUD for new clock, or $500 at the subaru dealer!!!

OK, so here we are in 2022, and my clock/info module has stopped again.
I think I remember reading this (or similar) thread back in 2016 when my '04 B3.0 was intermittent, followed the instructions and it worked.
So clock stopped again, came here to remember how to do it;
De-soldered the top mounts for the screen, gently pried open and re-soldered R4.
This time I took just the circuit board back to the car and plugged it in, got the clock and after a few seconds the rest of the display came online.
Touching the selector pads with a key, I got it to cycle through the pages so all good.
I did however notice that, in the time it was plugged in and running, the back of the board was a little warm to the touch, so I guess this is going to be an ongoing problem...
Note to others; when opening the unit, make sure you have the screen facing downwards, otherwise when it opens, all the pushbutton switches and their little contacts fall out.
For those looking for R4, it's just about under the bottom of the second digit of the 'clock' area of the screen.
And of course in my rush, I forgot to photograph any of this work.

Post script; OK, it didn't work the first time (this time), reassembled and nothing worked, pulled it all apart and plugged in just the board and it only worked if I gave it a bit of a twist so had to open up again and have another re-solder of R4.
This little bugger doesn't have any 'legs', just sit on the board and is soldered on the ends, and I think it solders ok, but as it cools it recracks the solder?
Anyway, got it all done and back together, and I'll just see how long it works... :-|
