Crank > A/C Pulley troubles.

Hey all, my name is Tom,im relatively new to the forum. I own a 05' Lib GT 2.0 up in Brissie.

I have recently discovered that my a/c belt slipped off and burnt through the housing cover close to the a/c belt!
Something was burning as I was driving and it sure wasnt the clutch!

I had a look at the engine all the pulleys and say that the crank pulley was "off orbit" slightly and resulted in a bit of a wobble.

The wobble has resulted in the crank pulley grinding into the housing cover a bit.
I removed all belts, degreased lightly and brushed out the pulleys and surrounding areas of the shaved off bits of plastic and went and got a new a/c belt from supercheap.

After assuming that this belt was too long for the a/c pulley and tensioning pulley, I re attached the
powersteering/alternator belt and brought it back to tension. After starting the car, the crank pulley wobble has
dissappeared but im unsure if this is because it is being supported by the tension of the p/s + alt belt.

Im worried that when I get a replacement a/c belt that it will cause the crank pulley to wobble once more and go through this whole saga again

Ive attached a few pics to see what you guys think.

Is my replacement a/c belt too big? or am I just retarded and have tried to put it on wrong

Does anyone know if I need a new crank pulley and obviously housing cover?

Cant find much about this in the LegacyGT or these forums

Thanks for the advice in advance guys :) Much appreciated.

Hi mate

Same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago except my crank pulley was not off centre

Judging by the second pic, If there was enough force to offset your crank pulley, then something was seriously wrong. My guess Is the tensioner is rooted and/ or the tension was too high (possibly both with the latter resulting in the former)

Safest bet is to get your crank pulley off and checked for roundness, as well as replacing the ac belt tensioner and new ac belt

And yes that belt looks way too big - make sure it's ac belt they gave you not alternator/ ps belt

My problem was the ac pulley shit itself and started cutting into the belt. So I cut it and am yet to replace (laziness/ busy) so currently have no ac

Good luck

Mick

I dont suppose any one knows what size the crank pulley bolt is?

Im off on a mission to remove it today!

Edit - don't worry, it's 22mm

Edit #2 - after spending toooo long finding the correct belt size.... I successfully put both belts on and it ran just as it should for about 5 minutes. During the 5 minute test run, the crank pulley was wobbling like crazy once again.

After turning the car off and starting it again, the ac belt slipped off due to the startup stress and wobbly crank.

So now I'm trying to hunt down a crank pulley.
Repco hasn't got one listed on their system, Garrmax parts in Brendale says that he has 1 crank, but he says it just says Subaru liberty my99+ and is unsure if it would fit
And finally
Went to Subaru (yeah I know, what was I expecting) and they can get me one for $360.

I see that they have lightweight crank pulleys around, I might try and hunt one down in Brisbane today.

Does anyone have recommendations?

Ask Subi if it is the same part number as my99 liberty, check out bursons and make sure they check their books (Bursons and Repco) not just their computer system for the part.

Update -

Yesterday I tracked down the correct size Harmonic balancer for a 2.0l GT.
It turns out that any of the 2.0 and 2.2L sized ones will fit, the 2.5L version is 0.5m thicker (im sure it wouldnt be a major issue)

I went to Subi Evolution in Brendale, Brisbane to get a hand to get the harmonic balancer (crank pulley as I have been incorrectly referring to) off.
Took a fair bit of force to get it off, but this is what we found:

1) Harmonic balancer, Timing belt covers, belts and both fans removed:

2)Timing Belt cover damage from the off centre harmonic balancer and the slipped a/c belt

3)The worn and the new harmonic balancer:

4) The worn and the new harmonic balancer side view - No wonder the belts were slipping off!

5) A new problem, the slipped a/c belt has stripped off the a/c power plug and as a result will not work until I find a new a/c compressor or a/c compressor clutch.

So now im trying to hunt down a new a/c compressor plug and clutch.

Good thing I swapped the harmonic balancer when I did, before it completely blew out or before a small rock got flicked in through the small gaps in the timing belt cover!

They also had a spare timing belt cover so thanks again to Subi Evolution for the assistance.
