MY07 GT B rocker cover gaskets fix

Postby bigBADbenny » Fri Jun 22, 2012 2:13 pm

Mine are a little leaky, STi recommended fixing them but the quote was HUGE!
Reading the workshop service manual, it doesn't seem that hard.
Remove under cover, remove air pump stuff, remove rocker covers, replace gaskets (massively abbreviated version).
Am I dreaming that I could do this myself??? Set me straight.

OK and update, I'm sick of even a little oil on my car park

As recommended by my mate at STi, and by Bruce here, I called Steve Siladi (Sharpie) who:

gave me a really great quote with the option of letting me source the parts myself...

the option of hanging out whilst he does the work (with a view to learning some stuff)...

Result!

Altona, Melbourne.

He's an ex Docklands STi mechanic. (correct me if I'm wrong there)

Next step is to order the gasket sets for the rocker covers and rocker cover bolts, from Subaru Genuine Parts in the US of...

Cam cover gaskets aren't that difficult, Do they still have crescent moon seals in new heads?

If so check those too. When I did them on my RS I also replaced some of the bolts, or used some gasket goo on them to make sure they were sealed also.

It took me a while to do the passenger side, as the bolts are a bugger to get out, I have vague recollections of undoing engine mounts and jacking the engine up to do that side. Drivers side is much easier.

Agreed and thanks for the advice! Yeah the air pumps gear is all in the way for newer ej's which adds time to the job - approx 3 hours done by an expert - Sharpie in this case. Planning to keep the motor fairly stock thus keeping the air pumps for now :D

Parts about to be ordered from Makin and Luby, similar to USA pricing but at least I know I'm getting the right parts for my car checked against VIN.
MY07 GT B:
1 B409B SU-13270AA190 GASKET ROCKER CVR RIGHT 88A
2 B508A SU-13272AA140 GASKET ROCKER CVR LEFT 88A
3 B609C SU-13293AA051 GSKT-ROCKER CVR x 4 units total

Just confirming how many units of part #3 I need before proceeding ^^^ :D
Makin and Luby are impressive, I had a quote within an hour or so, confirmed I was ordering the right amount of parts via telephone, my parts are in stock, and I can pickup 8-5 weekdays or 8-12 on Sat.
Job will come in at roughly 1/2 the main dealer quote TOTAL plus I get to watch... And I like to watch :P
WIN! Thanks be to this wonderful forum... :air_kiss:

What's the quoted price on the parts?

I have a relative with a fozzy that needs these replaced.

I paid maybe $130?
If no air pumps it a diy job for sure or if you know the air pumps then yes too.
I don't so I'll be assisting
