hey there, just need some advice or help, so pretty much every time i go into 5th it crunches and if im doing high RPM going down to 3rd will crunch. i only just got the car and the guy said that he put a new gearbox in but im thinking that was a lie, do i just need a new syncro or is it something more serious? cheers, Brad x

Maybe change the fluid and see if it helps but I think the synchros are gone.

As in they are worn and need replacing.

Chances are the guy put in a second hand gearbox because the original one had a fault or something had worn excessively.

I would try by replacing the oil first and see if any chunks of metal come out, if so, you need to rebuild the gearbox and replace whatever has broken.
If there are no chunks in the oil then refill the box with new oil, if this doesn't stop the crunching into gear then you will need to get the gearbox removed and stripped down to inspect the damage, you may just need the synchros done, you may need a whole rebuild, it can't be said for sure until its been stripped and inspected.

Dump the oil out...

Put this oil in....

then she'll be alright...

I do swear that $$$$ is worth putting that oil in your gearbox, My previous liberty which I sold it was at 380,000kms and the gearbox was wearing out and crunches in 2nd, 3rd and 5th - pretty bad.. since I put that shockproof oil in - problem went away.

I know that there is a price tag of that oil but I admit it is worth it. Its about $128 for a few pints.
Cheers

You may find the staked nut on the main shaft is starting to come undone. This nut is what holds 5th gear onto the mainshaft. Its a relatively common fault.
