I was thinking of painting my stock 3.0R spec.b grille a matte black colour. I just finished painting my wheels a couple of days ago so i was going to use the same sort of process.
1)clean grille
2)spray 1 coat of filler primer
3) spray 3 coats of paint
4) spray 2 coats of clear coat
Has anyone done this before? Or does anyone have any tips to offer?
Cheers, Ciaran

yep thats pretty much it, id suggest using a plastic primer/adhesion promoter prior to putting down a filler primer just to make sure the paint sticks and stays on, nothing worse than having flaking paint on things like grilles, moulds, bar inserts etc...
one other thing, you say you want a matte black grill yet your gonna clear it? did you mean you want the grill glossy in a solid black color? or are you going to use a non glossy clear coat to give it a frosty look?

Go over the grill with some 400 grit sandpaper or a scotchbrite pad first to rough the surface up for better adhesion.
You will need plastic primer on the chrome.
A light rub on the primer filler with 800 grit paper after its dried.
If you use matt paint and then clear gloss you'll get a satin black finish.

So can i buy a non glossy clear coat? didn't know they existed, should have used that on my wheels as they are a tad shinier than i wanted.
Thanks

dunno if its available 'off the shelf' so to speak, but at work we just use an acrylic clear which dries off dull, quite a nice effect if you dont want full gloss
