Hey Guys,

Im a novice when it comes to working on a subaru. I recently purchased a subaru liberty 2002/03 wagon. In the last week i have noticed a problem in the power steering. When the car is on full lock or close to both front wheels vibrate pretty badly. I have replaced both belts and it did help but has not solved the problem. Does any one have any ideas what it could be and what i need to do??

Cheers leeky

The fluid may be dirty and old making it thin and not get to the appropriate working pressure, but mainly you're not meant to hold the steering on full lock, you are meant to let it return ~5degrees. If you sit in the car and turn to full lock the pump will whine excessively, let go of the wheel and it will turn back slightly and the pump will go quiet. That's the furthest you should turn the wheel to avoid damaging the pump and rack.
