Why do you want to do this? If because something has died, like the pump, or the rack, they will need a full dismanlte to clean metal debris out of things - dont forget the hoses too.
If you mean to bleed air out of a system thats been emtied and refilled, all I have read says to top up, lock to lock until bubbles stop coming into reservoir, check level again.

Get a mechanic to do it.
You can do it, but its not 100%
Get a big syringe, or something to suck the fluid out the reservoir, drain as much as possible, fill it up with new fluid, start the car, turn it lock to lock 4 or 5 times, drain the fluid again and repeat until the fuild you are removing from the reservoir is the same color as the fluid you are putting in. it generally takes about 4 or 5 times to get it looking clean.
The proper way (how a mechanic should do it)
Disconnect the return hose to the reservoir, plug the connector to the reservoir. Get another piece of hose and an oil container and connect the hose to the disconnected return line, get a 3-4l bottle of power steering fluid/ATF and a pump. Get someone to start the car and slowly (not too slowly though) turn the steering wheel lock to lock as you pump the new fluid into the system, when you've used 3l (or if you can see the fluid coming out, when that is clean) get your assistant to switch off the car. reconnect everything and top up the fluid as required.

Sounds familiar to me Karl..

Good learning experience.

personally the syringe procedure is pretty damn good
and a nice clean way of doing it.

It's the cleanest method but it isn't as thorough as you are mixing old and new fluid, essentially just diluting it continually. The other method, if you have a pump you can use it's better as it flushes the whole system and adds new fluid at the same time.
