Top up gear oil in 3.0?

I have had my car off the road for about 2 weeks now because its been leaking gear oil something shocking and i havent had the money to pay to get it fixed.
Anyway its going in tomorrow and i have about a 45 minute drive to where its getting fixed.
Dipstick current level shows 1 drop on the bottom of the dipstick, about 7mm below the LOW line.
The guy that is fixing it ( apparently Subaru specialist) said the only way to top up the gear oil is through the dip stick hole right down behind the engine on the transmission.

Is this right?? surely there would be an easier way to top it up?

Cheers,

If you remove the secondary chamber (the box just before the throttle body) and use a wide mouth funnel it can be done. I did this once, slow and pain in the arse but doable. I also used 1ltr bottles which helped.

Well anyway i did just wing it and drove there carefully. Didnt do any damage that the guy could see. But replacing a front entrance seal to the gearbox ended up costing 670$ with oil and seal

When I work at home I use a hose on a funnel. At work we use a hand pump.
