Just curious has anyone swapped to a 6 speed box in their liberty/legacy? I think the current box in my jdm legacy is a TY757VBAAB. Anyone know what power this would be reliably able to handle without going kablamo? I've heard the 6 speed box is longer ratio so better for motorway driving etc and a lot stronger than the 5 speed. Anyone know what would be involved in the swap, It could fit nicely into future plans of upping the power on mine, i get bored of things quickly so need some new projects to keep me interested in the legacy!

Box
Clutch
flywheel
starter
master cyl
slave cyl
6 speed tailshaft
shifter mech (obviously)

Though I changed from a 92 5 speed to an 03 6 speed I thought it was worth it. I used an STI (WRX) box, which didn't have the longer ratios on 5th and 6th, so I didn't sit on 2100rpm @ 100kph, I was closer to 2600. (with 215/45/17 tyres)

No change to the ECU?

I'm with Ric I woulda thought an ECU tune for the car is essential for something like this?

I did retune, (the aftermarket ecu I was using) but only because just after I fitted an STI engine, bigger turbo, injectors, intake. I wouldn't have otherwise.

The loading of the engine will obviously change after a change in ratios, but I've seen several people swap boxes in cars with ECUs that can't be retuned that didn't show any negative repercussions.

Cost wise:
Box/clutch/flywheel/starter ancillaries package $4.5k
Tailshaft (happened to share the same as the auto model of that year Lib) $100
Rear diff case (R160) with crownwheel and pinion I ratios I wanted (I wanted 3.9 final drive) $100
Cusco 1.5way Plated mechanical rear diff centre $600 ----------> looks on peoples faces as I drove around a carpark either clunking like the car was going to fall apart or chirping the inside wheel .....Priceless!

I did this almost 5 years ago, I bought all the stuff locally from an Importer I trusted, but nowadays you can buy a bare liberty box by taking a drive to Yandina in QLD for $2200, so you could do it for less nowadays.

Instead of starting a new topic i thought id post on here.

Wondering what people's thoughts are on whether converting my auto 04 liberty to a 6 speed manual will muck up anything with the dbw throttle?

From my research im pretty clear on what needs to be changed mechanically, and how to wire the auto ecu so that it can still make use of the abs.

Will also need to wire the neutral switch to the back of the clutch pedal so it can start with clutch in only and fool the transmission ecu into thinking its constantly on.

But for some reason i have this paranoia that the dbw might not like the change to manual?

I can get a cheap 6 speed setup for under 4k and with the planned mods (2.5 built motor etc) im trying to weigh up if this will work.

I know some mechanics and tuners that could make it work. Whether it's financially worth it is another question.

I'll be doing most of the work myself but the dbw thing worries me a little

Like I've said before the mechanical and fitment side isn't too hard

It's the wiring and electricals that's gonna make i a bitch

The question I have is would doing this swap give you a better outcome than selling your current car and finding an equivalent 2.5/6 speed.

Unless you have a wagon I'm not sure you'll end up with a product that's superior to a factory version or do it cheaper. It's not hard to swap your mods onto the new car either. /my 2c

It is too early in the morning for me to think.
So my wagon runs a 3.9:1 diff and a six speed from a 3.0rb, which also has a 3.9:1 (obviously, as my car is yet to have diff problems). So, I am pondering changing to the 3.54:1 from a 6 speed gt.
Is it just a matter of cracking the box open and replacing the 1.1:1 output reduction with a 1.0:1 one? I realise that is a lot of ones in one sentence.
Also, for you fast 6 speed guys out there, what gear and mph are you crossing the line at over the 1/4?

I wouldn't classify myself as a fast 6 speed guy lol but on my quickest/best run, I crossed at 112.8 mph but needle was in the red in 4th.
