I've been asked in a pm to make a thread of how and where to do an Upper Cylinder Clean with the Subaru product.

I am collecting photos at work as I work on various libertys, so hold tight for them in the next week or so. If you want help for a specific car, then post up an engine bay pic and I'll help you out. So far I have Gen4 N/A photos and Gen3 N/A photos.

The Subaru product does have instructions on the can, which are very simple to follow, but it can be time consuming. The way workshops do it is simply rev the engine at abour 2,500rpm and spray the cleaner into the intake.

On non turbos (H4 and H6) undo the intake piping hoseclamp on the throttle body, use a large flat blade screw driver to make a gap between the piping and the throttle body and put the end of the Upper Cylinder Cleaners spray hose in and spray the contents of the can into the throttle body with the engine revving. When the can is empty run the engine for another 1-2minutes to burn off the excess in the intake. When spraying you will notice a big cloud of smoke from your exhaust, it is normally a white smoke, this is normal as its cleaning the carbon out the engine.

For turbo models there are 2 methods: Again, rev the engine to about 2,500rpm.
Method 1: Disconnect the vaccuum hose on the BOV and slowly spray the contents of the can into the vaccuum line.
Method 2: Undo the hose clamp on the throttle body and use a large flat blade screw driver to make a gap. Spray the can into the intake with the engine revving.
Method 2 is suited to B4s and older turbos as Gen4 turbos have the intake piping under the intercooler and manifold.

Great idea! Wouldn't have had the foggiest, not that I have ever bothered to look into it. Just never been something I've thought to do really. So out of interest, could you please post up the Gen III pics you already have?

Thanks to Dropz help I used the bov vacuum hose method and it worked great.

Was awesome to finally get an answer I could trust on this issue, as the few times I asked nobody gave a clear answer.

is it recommended to do this at a certain interval? like every 10000kms or something??

Every 12,500km it is part of the logbook servicing, but if you change the oil and filter yourself then I'd recommend it.

Centre is a cap type thing that pops up, and clips on either side, and obviously the hose clamp

On the right there is a clip and 10mm bolts, on the left there is the air duct and a clip.

As with the H6 use a screw driver and spray it in. The same can be said for all N/As

Turbos use the BOV vac line, spray a bit slower with these as it's going into a smaller hose and it may spit back at you:
(not the scribble out red one, the smaller hose - not my photo, I'll get one when I work on a turbo next)

So two things after this sparking my interest...

- is there a specific type (product code), I need to get for a 2.5 N/A or is it one size fits all?
- where do I get me some? The local Subaru dealer, or will somewhere like repco sell it?

Subaru parts will sell you a can, just ask for upper engine cleaner.
Wurth also sell their own branded product at repco/ bursons, etc

I just had a quick browse through the Wurth website and the only UCC I found was for Carbies.

I tried opening that on my iPhone and PM'ing him through the thread but as it quotes te actual post it basically cracked the shits. I remember the thread but thought that would have been well and truly snapped up by now.. :/. I'll get onto him when I get home, thanks mate.

Carby cleaner is very similar.

A more effective product is Amsoil Power Foam. Similar directions and it does a better job, comes in a bigger can too haha!

Yeah the dealership way is half as effective cos we are pushed to work faster.

Chaotic, I don't see a pic there of the upper engine cleaner, but if he is selling Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner it'll be the same.

You know, that doesn't sound like such a bad idea since i'm down near the bay about once a fortnight anyway! I'll give you a PM next time i've done a small service and changed my filters, oil, etc. and see what we can tee up!

hm, I'd love to use the cleaner and apply it myself on the car, but none of the images are showing the engine I have. I reckon the 4th gen engine is not here but I reckon it's closer to 3rd generation rather than 5th. Has anyone any image of where to apply it on the 4th generation engine ? [ liberty 2006 4th gen my06 2.0r drange ]
