Noise from Front Whilst turning?

Postby jacobraftery » Tue Aug 09, 2011 1:12 pm

Hey everyone,

Been awhile since Ive been around, probably a sign that the car has been performing as it should, perfectly. Ive got a strange one for you though. About four months ago the front left (what sounds like the front left) began to make the softest noise when I went into a right hand corner and the left had a load put onto it. It has progressively been getting worse and worse and now its at the point where I feel its becoming dangerous. The noise is more of a rubbing, kind of metallic grind, the faster I go, the louder it is... But that isnt to say going softly fixes anything. The noise is also there when I am accelerating say, up a hill.. I can hear a metallic grind and squeak, softly, from the front...

Heres the clincher, Ive just replaced the front wheel bearing on that side. Took it for a drive and there was absoloutely no change. The CV Joints are fine also. I took the car to Pedders to get it checked over and they came back saying that it was definitely the front left, and that 150 (excluding part) would solve the problem. Working in the industry I picked up a Koyo, got my Mechanic mate to come over with his press and busted out the spanners... No avail.

Ive been doing a bit of reading, and I keep coming across posts saying that even though there was a noise from the front left, it was infact the front right bearing that was causing the trouble? Is this possible? With no load? Even a few posts saying that, a noise from the front actually ended up being from the rear? Surely it would be more distinctive?

Any help, any light, any experience would be fantastic.
Many Thanks, Hope you are all travelling well.

Jacob.

You talking about a sound that is almost like squeaky brakes? Because I have the same issue in my 4th gen and its strange because I cant always make it happen. Its definitley not brakes though if I apply them I tend to loose the sound? sounds strange to me.

Mmmm, Squeaky brakes possibly, but it isn't a consistent noise (meaning its not a rhythmic beat, it changes) and the brake pads themselves look alright.
Could it possibly be that the rotors have warped, or aren't aligned? This would judder the steering under braking would it not?

Anyone have any more ideas?

Are the CV joints fine, or are they just not leaking grease or split, because they can be worn and noisy without the boot being split or leaking.

the CV Joints aren't one I have inspected myself.
Pedders checked them for me, and said that they were alright.
My mechanic also said that the noise wasn't a CV, but I guess Ill have to check it myself.
Best way to go about this?

I have recently had what sounds like a similar or the same issue. Scraping kind of sound on sharp right corners that sounds like it is coming from the front left (although I can't be sure as I haven't had a chance yet to get someone in with me to listen for it more carefully).

Definitely doesn't sound like a brake thing to me.

It kind of sounds like the tyre scrubbing out on something, but I'm running stock everything and the tyre doesn't appear to have any damage.

It's going in for a service Monday anyway so I will see if they can also locate that issue.

I took a video of what I think is making the noise.
I filmed the right side, and then i compared the movement to the left.

Can someone tell me what exactly Im looking at here? And how pedders missed it? haha.
Many thanks guys.

That is the Powersteering rack. It may need a rebuild if it is The cause of noise.

Thanks for the reply mate,
Would it be an idea to replace it? Or is a better idea/cheaper to just get it rebuilt?

A rebuild is normally cheaper. Thinking about it t may just be the rack ends are loose an need tightening, they should check that before they take it out. Speak to your mechanic and ask them to check the rack ends are tight :)

My mechanic said the only thing they could see wrong was the lower control arm bushes being worn.
I was gonna upgrade to the ones Phat sells anyway but I've put a rush on that now so I'll see if it is that.

I'll probably get someone different to install that have a look over everything as a second opinion. The more eyes on it the better.
Will get them to make sure to check the power steering too.

i have what sounds to be the same problem.. I thought it was my wheel bearings causing my wheel to move a bit and touch the brakes pads.

Had a mechanic look at it, said the bearings are fine. the only thing i need to change is the bushes.

could be the cause?

I found my problem.

The metal brake shims in my front right is crooked and rubbing on the rotor, causing it to squeal. Gonna get that fixed next week while i'm getting some lower springs put in the front :D
