Help - PAC-SWI Wiring - SOLUTION NOW INSIDE!

Hi guys,

Just installed a new double DIN audio system in my MY05 3RB. I need some help wiring up the PAC-SWI-PS steering wheel interface.

Like the 3-page guide on installing a system with the McInrosh replacement - It says the wiring on the PAC Audio site is incorrect - which it is. And they DONT ACTUALLY PROVIDE THE SOLUTION!

So i need some help finding out what wires do what and where to connect them to - In the 8pin connector it says connect the white PAC wire to the pin 3 and then put pin 7 to ground. There is however, only one wire on the connector connected (green pin -so I have no idea where to connect it to.

There is another connector with 5 wires filled - I'm assuming one of these will be used.

Has anyone done this before/or know where I can get the correct wiring diagram from?

*bump* can anyone help?

I've contacted StingerAustralia the reseller of the device - who have refused to help as I have no receipt (bought the device 2nd hand off friend-of-a-friend who recently removed his stereo and didn't need it, hence have no receipt!) *sigh* great customer support!

Anyway I believe the 4 wires I need come from the 20pin connector (that plugged in to the McIntosh system) - not the 8pin..

I would be eternally grateful!

You can find USDM and AUDM workshop manuals for the pre-facelift Gen 4 in the following thread (it is the top stickied thread in the Reference section. They include a fairly comprehensive wiring diagram.

Thanks smythie - but that didn't help - it doesnt even list the 20pin connector as plugged in to the McIntosh

Oh, and you do realise the PAC-SWI-PS is only for Pioneer and Sony headunits?

After reading some more, I've found the following for you.

In the connector above, you want to
-connect the cable that goes to Pin3 (the Violet with White trace cable) to the White cable on the PAC-SWI-PS
-connect the cable that goes to Pin7 (the Orange with White trace cable) to chassis ground.

Looking at the back of the radio the pins are numbered:

4 3 2 1
8 7 6 5

Connect the Red cable on the PAC-SWI-PS to +12V (should be on the 24 pin connector - let me know if you need info on this cable) and the Black cable on the PAC-SWI-PS to chassis ground.

Best thing to do with the chassis ground cables it to connect them both to the same spot, eliminate any ground loops etc.

Hope the above helps, let me know if the cables in Pin3 and 7 do not match the colours ive mentioned above.

Thanks for trying mihai - but thats the same instructions as on the PAC website - and are wrong - there's only 1 wire connected to the 8-ping plug

Update:

I've done some multimeter tests (unsuccessful installation however)

There are 4 wires populated in the 20pin connector they are;

Yellow
Brown
White
Blue w/white stripe

Connecting the Blue/w White stripe to Signal (multimeter) and the yellow to GROUND I have the following resistances on the steering controls;

No Connection: 24.8ohms
Mode button: 26.0ohms
Track up button: 25.5ohms
Track down button: 25.0ohms
Vol up button: 26.5ohms
Vol down button: 26.0ohms
Mute button: 27.0ohms

The solution search continues.....

Well I've finally figured it out!! After hours of removing the steering wheel, and tracing wires through the loom, and multimetering all connections.....

With no help from Stinger Australia (who's product it is, yet refuse to support it without showing a receipt! *sigh*)

Hoping this will help others out when buying the cheaper PAC-SWI units off eBay and the like...

Step 1. Remove the drivers footwell guard and locate the the white connector - it comes from the steering column from the wheel itself. There are two wires that look very familiar! (Violet w/white stripe, and Orange w/white stripe)



Step 2. Cut them off the main loom (you must cut, you can't splice in as it goes somewhere into the main loom - possibly to a canbus-type interface that gets translated and output to the standard McIntosh unit somehow) - and take the outputs from the white connector - not the other side!




Run some hookup wire to the back of the deck or wherever you have the PAC-SWI unit located. Mine is behind the Pioneer head unit. Put the Orange/white to ground, and then the violet/white to the WHITE interface wire on the PAC as per their instructions. Then of course follow the PAC directions to program the unit.

VOILA!

This just saved me heaps, alot of searching and i found the answer, i also did 10000 multimeter test and found what you found, i just didn't go to the steering column... thanx mate

You are a bloody genius!!!
I spent a rediculous amount of time trying to get my steering wheel controls working with my new Alpine IVA520. It was so depressing me that I actually gave up and was resigned to the fact that my steering wheel control buttons were for looks only.
