Coding a Key

Hi All,
As per my previous post I recently bought my wife a MY07 Premium Pack Wagon. The car only had one key and I had the seller obtain and ship me a blank.

Now Subaru in Mentone want $60 to code the key, for $60 they must not be doing much. I am in to motor bikes and have a few sports bikes that use coded keys. The process for Honda CBR's is to basically put the ignition on, press a few buttons, replace key and so on.

Is it possible to code the key myself for this liberty or do I need to go an see Subaru?

Any tips or help is appreciated.

Shane

i had a new key coded not long ago.
the impression i got from the guy at the dealer was they need to get your VIN number which they send to subaru HQ to access the key codes. these are sent back to the dealer which is where they then code the key to match your car.
anyone correct me if im wrong but thats the impression i got from my dealer.

the key it self still costs around $400
then the key needs to be cut around $15
then the key needs to be programmed $60

Correct HoFF.

The money is not in the programming, it is in the key itself.

Yes I understand that the replacement key is the main part of the replacement cost

So is it worth saving 60 bucks to possibly stuff 400 bucks worth of key?

To code the key for keyless access can be done by yourself,to program for starting you need to use a scan tool/Subaru Monitor and your key registration code. This code is supplied to you when you purchase the car and it is on a little metal tag.If you lose this your dealer has to e-mail Subaru and they will then supply the code so your key can be programmed.Hope this helps.

AW F#$KBALLS!!!

That's what that little metal thingo was, when I gave my car over with my spare to the repairers after the theft I did think to myself 'I really do wonder what this little metal piece on the ring was'

There you go.

Mind you, if they re-programmed the car so the old stolen key was made useless, I guess that little code becomes void...yer, that's what I'll tell myself

If you have lost this plate and you need it,PM me your VIN and I will get it for you.Just give me a little time as Subaru have limited access to FHI at the moment due to the tsunami.

That code stays as it is coded to the ECM/BIU.1 tag is for the key cutting code,1 is for the immobiliser.Once it is programmed for the keyless the old key wont work unless it is used manually.

Dude, well worth a try!

In addition to the purchasing the key, it will probably cost you around another $100 to get it cut and coded (based on conversations I had with a Mister Mint guy in Bondi who cut my surf key that I got done, it has no electrical gizmo in it, just the blade for when I went swimming in the ocean)

Yeah I guess there's no harm in giving it a go, thanks for your thoughts.
Does anyone know the equivalent models of the Australian liberty's compared to the US legacy models?
I've got a MY06 2.0R NA, so which year model would this relate to in the US?
Its just that the keys are apparently made specifically to each year model from what it says on the ebay item :-?

Interesting, I'd have thought they'd be the same as all models originate from Japan, I guess it is worth the question though :?
