dash lights/head unit/illumination?

hey, when i installed my head unit into my car (aftermarket) we cut the original plugs off.
the dash lights worked untill i removed the head unit again to install a different aftermarket one.
there are 2 cables that i dont understand where they go. they are yellow with blue strip & white with yellow strip.
when i connect the yellow with blue to power, they light up BUT when i turn the parker lights/head lights on, they go out.
it is like the switch has been inverted but im sooo confussed and would proffer to wire this myself rather then take it to the auto-electrition for $88 per hour

any help anyone?
