Painting Parts

Have some parts that I want painted:

Ultrex Grill
Eyelids
Chrome taillight strips

I am thinking about a DIY solution as teh parts are fairly small in surface area so Im thinking that DIY should be ok?

I think I will need to sand/prime the parts but not too sure what goes on here? Grill and eyelids are fibreglass, taillight strips are plastic?

Can anyone offer input, dont really want it professionally done as it will cost heapsss

Failing this I will just get touchuoguys.com.au to repair a scratch I have and paint this stuff at the same time - quotes $600-$700.

PS I found this walkthrough http://forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=7559 not sure if the process if different though because I am using a gloss/metallic paint instead of matte? Would it be the same process for the chrome strips aswell (id probs need to sand the chrome off before priming)?

Yep, Exactly the same process.
You won't need to rub the Chrome completely off, just abrase enough so the primer has someting to bond to.
...and be patient, if you rush it you'll f*#k it up no doubt.

Oh, one more thing.
If by any chance you have access to a compressor and a paint gun, I'd use that.
Prob get a nicer finish being gloss metallic you're workin' with.

Ah k cool I was gonna use a pressure pack from supercheap or something, but i do have access to a compressor/paint gun. So I guess I might get some paint.

Also will i need any special kind of primer?

My understanding is, to do it by the book you will need to use the corresponding primer in relation to your topcoat.
Having said that I am not an auto painter, I cheat and use the same primer for every DIY job I've done (MIL-Spec to aviation
standards. I get it cheap) and never had a problem.

Maybe there is a painter on the forums who could be more informative or just ask your paint shop when they mix up your
paint, they will have an auto grade primer that is guaranteed not have any unwanted reactions.

Hehe MIL-Spec primer is usually a 2 pack paint, so you should never have an issue unless you stuff your prepping.

I'm not an auto painter, but I've done my fair share of spraying over my time. If you want the best visual look and quality of paint, 2 pack paint is definitely the best way to go. Especially with metallic paints. Nothing beats a nice coat of 2 pack clear.

If you have got access to a gun and compressor, this is way to go. However, if you've only got a few small parts to paint, and you don't plan on spraying often, it can be a rather expensive job. Reason being is that primer is only sold in 1L tins, same with clear and hardener. To buy everything you need, you be looking at close to $100 before you even start.

If you live close to some auto spray shops, I think you'd be surprised t the price they would charge for a cash job.

I can never get it as good as what a professionally trained person can do it in a booth. Always seem to have small defects that i can never be happy with.

If you need to buy automotive paints go to any auto paint supplier. They will sell you however much you want. For any unpainted plastics you will need plastic primer. Your paint code should be on passenger side strut tower. Any other questions feel free to ask.

Except when it comes to primer, clear coat and hardener. Hence why i said they are only available in 1L tins. This has been the case with every automotive paint supplier i have been to so far.

When it comes to colours, they will usually mix up amounts in 250mls (eg, 250ml, 500ml, 750ml, 1L etc).


One thing I forgot to mention earlier....if you are spraying 2 pack paint, you MUST wear a good quality breathing mask. Acrylics you should too, but 2 pack is a definite.
