When I say 'more seasoned', nothing compares to an 81 XD falcon with vinyl seats and a black vinyl steering wheel (still don't know what they were thinking with that one) and 4 / 80 air conditioning (manually operated)*.

Second to this was the early 90's hilux that also had vinyl seats and steering wheel but only 2 / 80 air conditioning* and was driven by a chain smoker before me, there were times that I thought the dash had a pack-a-day habit with the smell coming from it.

Anyways, where was I going with this, yer right, Sweet Lady Liberty is pretty cool lady after 5 minutes, by the time the GPS has initialised, song is picked and chewing gum is in the mouth, the car is too good.

I do the sock thing too, I use one of those ipod socks (that look like I stole a baby's booty) and I point the passenger vent on the centre console down at the gear stick, you can take the sock off after about 2 minutes.

TS

* - 4/80 and 2/80 referred to the number of windows opened followed by the speed you are doing...manually operated meant I had to open each one before starting the car (I was a student and I got 11 months rego on a car that I paid $700 for)

Oh, don't get us wrong. We're not all wusses. My Silvia (first car... had it for 7 years before gettin my liberty) had zero air conditioning by the time i was thinkin of gettin rid of her... and stepping into her on a 35 degree day was like stepping into the waiting room of hell, and driving around with the windows down was like trying to keep cool in a sauna using 20 hairdryers.

The dash vinyl had a massive crack straight down the middle though from the excessive heat. And although I got it repaired, it came back again. I just want to make sure that it never ever happens to my new baby :)

It only takes 10 extra seconds to put on a couple of sunshades, as opposed to working 20 hours extra to afford to replace a cracked dashboard.

Fair point, fair point.

I did one of those dash repairs on my Fiat dash as well, it was rubbish. I think it resplit after 18 months but in truth, that was one of the longest lasting repairs done. God, I hated that car and at times I was pretty sure the car and God hated me back.
Now that I'm in North America, I'm greatly concerned about raised pick-up trucks and owners of wedge shaped vehicles. Seriously, not only do you have to be concerned about one hitting you in an accident, they stand a good chance of driving over you at the same time!

One idea I just had, is why not tint the front windscreen with a clear UV/heat resistant film? Surely that's legal?

I don't think so. Might have to check the ADR, but they seem to be allergic to any sort of film/potential vision impairment to the front windscreen. Rightly so, I'd say. Can you imagine what would happen if someone got a film done by Dodgy McShiftytint and it started peeling or getting bubbles underneath?

shame they're not allergic to the vision impairing thick a-pillars that seem to be the "in" thing with car designers these days.

+1 nearly got T boned the other day for that exact reason. (car hiding behind left A pillar, pedestrian behind right B pillar). I noticed the pedestrian first and braked quickly just as the car from the left flew past inches from taking me out...

From what my tinter has told me, front windscreens don't get tinted due to the fact that the glass is actually made of two separate layers put together. So when you tint one layer, it causes the two layers to react differently to temperature changes causing them to expand and compress? at different rates. Which will then cause the windscreen to shatter/crack. Not sure if what I've been told is true, but it seems logical.

I'd suggest just getting your windows and rear windscreen tinted (as mine has been). It sat in the 45 degree heat last sunday with all windows closed and no windscreen cover with the car pointed westward and aside from the oven like masses of hot air inside, none of the seats or controls were more than warm to the touch.

The tint isn't even particularly dark either
