POWER STEERING PUMPS - Episode 15
"CorgiWerx Will Not Deal in Aftermarket Pumps"

We recently received an exchange JKC PS Pump return that turned out to not be a genuine Subaru OEM JKC PS Pump. It was an aftermarket power steering pump.

CorgiWerx will not deal in aftermarket pumps. They are unreliable, They are Ess-Haitch-Eye-Tea. On the aftermarket pumps that we do see they blow out their internal seals. See the first photo.

They are equipped with an aftermarket copy inferior pressure control valve which has an inadequate pressure relief capability. As a consequence, the resulting excessive pressure blows out the o-ring seals.

The second photo compares the blown internal seals from the returned aftermarket pump with used seals removed from an OEM JKC pump. The pair of seals on the left are the blown seals and the pair on the right are the used seals from the OEM pump.

CorgiWerx will not deal in aftermarket power steering pumps. We cannot (and will not) expose our customers to the risk.

Hello Mr. Corgi. Thank you for your very insightful and detailed posts regarding PS pumps. I reside in Trinidad and own a (JDM) 2008 Legacy 2.0 GT that I acquired used from Japan at ~48,000 km. It is presently in for timing belt change and other seal changes at ~ 98,000 km. My mech has told me there is sign that my "power steering pump is leaking". I asked whether there was some seal(s) that could be replaced and he said no, and that the entire pump needed to be replaced. A new OE pump is $$$$$. I don't have a visual of the pump, but based on some of your posts, I'm guessing mines is a "side outlet" style (?) - for which there are rebuild kits available, right? However, we have not opened the pump to determine if there is any body wear within the pump. It was never serviced before. It appears that rebuilding is a precise piece of work. Would you recommend attempting to rebuild, or replace the pump, given my circumstance? Thanks in advance.

A 2008MY Legacy (Liberty) GT Turbo should use a side SHOWA side-outlet power steering pump.
There should be kits available in USA on ebay.
Look closely at the kit below.
This is the kit you need PLUS an inlet barb fitting o-ring.

It has a circlip and other seal.

POWER STEERING PUMPS - Episode 17
"CorgiWerx advice regarding the Black Pump"

I know that previously I have declared that I do not like Black Pumps. Please excuse me if I say it again.

“I hate Black Pumps”

I do not see that they represent value for money

Today I was doing a “love-job” on a BL H6 Spec-B. Time for a power steering pump overhaul. And YES, the pump being removed for overhaul was a Black Pump. It had been severely leaking oil from the gland on the pressure switch at the rear of the pump. It has been weeping out fluid for many months, probably a couple of years.

When the pump was disassembled the pump was found to be an 8.5cc/rev displacement pump from a BM/BR Gen5 H6 Liberty/Outback not the 9.6cc/rev unit specified for the BL/BP Gen4 H6 Liberty/Outback. It was a Black Pump stamped with letter punch serial number “JO711”.

The power steering pump appeared to be a low-kilometer unit possibly taken from a wreck being parted-out, given a new set of seals and a black paint job. By now the gland on the electrical switch was starting to leak.

The pump was given the full CorgiWerx treatment with 0.01mm lapped from the inner side plate and 0.02mm lapped from the rear cover. The Electrical switch gland was repaired and repacked to mitigate future fluid leaks.

Now, here is my beef. You go to one of these black-pump rebuild merchants and you are provided with the wrong power steering pump for your vehicle. You are not to know as they look identical externally. It is not known whether the incorrect pump was a supplier error or if it was an installer error. Either way, the incorrect specification pump was previous supplied and installed.

When you obtain a CorgiWerx Power Steering Pump you get the correct specification pump for your vehicle.

POWER STEERING PUMPS - Episode 18

We were contacted by David, who was playing with his JKC Power Steering Pump.
For all those playing along at home, the dimple mark on the modulating ring must face forward. The mark(s) should not be visible when the modulating ring is installed correctly.
