Let's talk Shifter Bushes

Postby BillyCorgi » Sun Apr 21, 2024 8:12 pm

So,
Quite a few Shifter Bush Kits and Short Shifter Adapters have been supplied to the Subaru community!
The occasional request is received from overseas, like New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom, France. We are an exporter!

So, for the 6MT STI and Spec-B TY856 gearboxes we have encountered four different shifter bush designs, let me summarise......

35035AG030 is the most common type.
These are a 17mm diameter bush with 14mm dia crush tube used in the Liberty Spec-B 6mt and the very last of the WRX STI.
They also are a replacement in the later midel 5MT shifters, from Gen4 Liberty time onwords.

35035FE070
These are a 19mm diameter bush with 12mm dia crush tube used in the early WRX STI 6MT transmission.
The original bushes can be identified by three sets of three pips on the flange of the bush.

35035FE080
These are a 18mm diameter bush with 12mm dia crush tube used in the early WRX STI 6MT transmission when the 35035FE070 is not being used.
The original bushes can be identified by three sets of one pip on the flange of the bush.

This makes it a PIA to supply bushes for the early WRX STI 6MT.
It gets worse when supplying bushes for a 6MT conversion where the owner does not know what bushes he has and does not know the VIN of the gearbox's donor vehicle.

Last there is 35035SA030
Just to be different, Subaru used an 18mm diameter bush on the Forester STI 6MT. Go figure.
These are a 18mm diameter bush with 14mm dia crush tube.

By the way, CorgiWerx has the designs for all of these bushes and can manufacture whatever shifter bush is required for your car.

So a young gentlemen sent me a note this morning. "These (shifter bushes) are the wrong size".
He had ordered a Shifter Bush Kit for his postface 6 speed gen4.
He sent the photo. I noticed one of the existing bushes in the photo.
A shifter bush with the three pips is from a 2002MY WRX STI 6 speed and is not from a postface 6 speed gen4.
CorgiWerx product knowledge.
We have made a fresh set of the WRX STI spec shifter bushes to send to him tomorrow.
Why his vehicle has the wrong shifter knuckle is not known.
Maybe someone retrofitted a STI short shifter to his car?
Might be nice if Subaru standardised on some common shifter bush sizes?
