I mixed Red coolant to my 3.0R Lib

Postby mokg » Fri Jun 08, 2018 11:01 pm

Hi, I am new to the forums..

I just purchased a Gen4 3.0 Liberty however i noticed the coolant level was low and I had Red coolant at home which was also Ethylene Glycol based as recommended by the manual.

Is this going to react badly with the green coolant already inside?

Yes, I think it will.

Top it up with cooled boiled water. From the kettle.

Best idea is to flush the cooling system with fresh water, then add new coolant.

Mixing different types of coolant can create a chemical reaction that causes solids to form (looks like cement dust) that ultimately block the radiator causing overheating issues. Remember that our cars don't cope with overheating well.

Seen it may times.

Unless it snows in your area, straight water will be fine. But we run the "coolant" (actually called antifreeze, water is the coolant) because of the corrosion and rust inhibitors.
But yeah, I wouldn't risk mixing stuff, just flush it for better peace of mind.

Only one thing to do here, dump and flush properly and re-fill with fresh coolant using recommended coolant (or Subaru green diluted with demineralised water - not cooled boiled water like some wally said that doesn't remove the minerals, it removes bacteria *sheesh*.

It's not just "antifreeze", it's antiboil and anticorrosion as well..... Engines run at a temperature close to the boiling point of water, so get a hot day - which we have plenty of here in summer - water becomes ineffective as a "coolant", and that can lead to major engine problems. Additionally, not all water supplies are equal; there are varying concentrations of additional minerals in different regions, many of which can be quite damaging to aluminium engine components. That said, some chemical coolants can also be damaging to aluminium, so be sure to choose the right type of coolant!
