Tacho has stopped working

97 liberty 2.5 tacho was working then died, Anyone have any ideas on possible common faults to chech out, fairly sure the tach is ok as it worked intermittently a few times, Have been told older subaru's can have dodgy connector plugs [ crumbly ] .
