HELP!!!

Postby ej25tt » Sun Jun 12, 2011 5:13 pm

I have an 08 sti DCCD spd box, TY856UB1KA, with 3.54 centre, and no DCCD controller.

I was on my way to murwillumbah today, and when i got on the highway, as soon as the any of the wheels 'aqua-planed' (speeds between 85-95km/h) a very nasty crunching noise started coming from within the gearbox.
Other forums suggest a faulty controller, but i dont have one for it. any suggestions?

Are you sure it's the gearbox?
That sounds like a problem in one of the differentials to me. You should try lifting all four wheels in the air on a hoist, and try rotating one wheel at a time to see if it feels rough.

i'd say it's a combination of the unpowered DCCD and the Heical front LSD and possibly the ABS reacting to the "wheelspin" thatit sensed
with unpowered DCCD centres you lose the LSD effect that it normally would have
so if one front wheel has lost grip, the car would try and put all torque through that wheel, the helical LSD would try and resist that and would be working overtime aswell as the DCCD spinning.

ABS could have cracked it and thought it had locked up one wheel and it was teh ABS motor doing it's thing

Actually even an unpowered 6 speed 06 and after will keep drive to all when spinning for because they came with a mechanical LSD on top of the planetary DCCD. Works very well.
Crunching with wheel spin could be as suggested, front or rear diffs, drive shafts or ABS having an issues. Check all your bolts are nice and tight everywhere (drivetrain and suspension) and then start checking diffs.
A noisy rear diff will often be heard from the "gearbox"
What rear 3.54:1 diff do you have, I imagine R160 for a Gen 3 Liberty (if we are talking about your car as pictured) if so what type of LSD diff is it, Viscous or plated etc?
His: '95 WRX with a "few" mods
Hers: Black 3.0RB wagon (trying to keep standard)

I saw in another topic that this car has been garaged for 12 months, but you recently got it out again.
Did you ever get to the bottom of this issue?
