Install sunroof on a car that doesnt have one?

Postby dr20t » Wed Jan 25, 2012 9:44 pm

Ok seeing as there is no interest in the sunroof from the gtb yet, thinking of installing in my 04 lib (which didnt come out with one from factory)

Was thinking of cutting the roof outer skin about 100mm around the perimiter of the sunroof cutout, and replicating this cutout in my 04 then having it welded in.

I know some people are thinking this might detract from the structural integrity but im not actually cutting into the roof inner (which is where the structural bulk is i believe, and the welding will be done properly by a boilermaker and refinished properly. Furthermore, there are various mobs that offer aftermarket sunroof installation so i cant really see how this would be much different.

Few questions:

1. People's thoughts?
2. Will the wiring be pretty much run into the roof headlining in my 04 lib (even though it didnt have a sunroof from factory), to allow me to simply connect the controls and replace headlining?
3. Will anything else need to be changed?

Cheers
Mick

I have no idea, but do it! Love the sunroof in my car, and could not do without one tbh.

There are a thew places around that can fit a sunroof to just about any car weather it could have had one or not . maybe try and find one and give em a call i had one put in a fairmont in sydney. came with a structual garanty and was a top job has been ten years and no leaks. cant remember the mob that did it but there out there. could give some usefull info.

Thanks guys

To be honest im thinking of having my mate (boilermaker and top notch welder) have a crack at welding the new "piece" in.

Will have a chat to sunroof guys first and get their verdict on whether its safe enough (obviously dont want to impact structural intregrity of the thing)

Would recommend that you go to the proper people to do this as it somewhat affects the structural integrity, & maybe ask them to use the sunroof from the donor car instead of their stock.

I have the donor car with everything in it for the sunroof so the hardest part isthmus physical cutting of the roof

Not a priority right now anyway as I need to get my car running first before thinking about doing this

I had a Webasto sunroof installed in my old car - cost about $1200 (Perth) by Prestige Sunroofs.

(FYI: was a Webasto 300 - http://www.webasto.com.au/products-and- ... /8215.html)

Top notch job - as they cut the roof lining they re-trim it completely.

Best money I ever spent.

Thank you mate great lead even though I'm in Sydney

Do you reckon it'd be fair bit cheaper seeing as I have the trim and complete sunroof setup from the spare car I have here?
