i just got a standard (1250KG) towbar fitted, and it didnt need the rear bumper on my wagon to be cut. the only hassle i guess with comparison to a heavy duty (other than capacity) is that is takes longer to remove the tongue (2 bolts vs a pin)

Is it possible to get a towbar for a sedan that doesn't need the cutout?

Maybe if you had a lift kit like in conkyd's avatar:

You need the heavy duty 50mm hitch reciever to be able to get a weight distribution kit. Otherwise you are limited to a towball weight of 90kg (and a lot of arse sag)

On my MY07;

the standard towbar is rated to 1250kg and a ball weight of 120Kg.
the heavy duty is rated at 1800Kg and a ball weight of 180Kg.

i only tow a box trailer and use it for a bike rack, so the heavy duty one is a bit of an overkill for me.

This seems to catch a lot of people out. You can't simply apply a 10% towball weight. Heres the label from my stock heavy duty towbar. It was a bit of a shock that the limit was 90kg for a 1500kg tow.

I've since got a weight distribution hitch ($400 secondhard) and moved my trailer wheels forward to reduce the towball weight to 114kg (about 12% of the trailer weight) which is well within the weight distribution hitch limit of 150 kg

Might be a dumb question, but how do you measure how much weight is on you tow ball?
