Replace my GT 2.0T with a prebuilt 2.5T?

Postby jslayz » Thu Aug 11, 2011 4:58 pm

Hi Chaps,

Thought I better post before I look any further into this.

Would it be possible to purchase a preassembled AMS or Cosworth short motor 2.5L and replace the current 2.0L one.
I would like to keep the AVCS heads in use, probably need a port/flow while motor is apart?

I'm planning a new intercooler turbo & exhaust setup too.

Will I need to change or purchase a new intake manifold?

I like my auto as this is a daily driver but know there is a Kw limit for the auto box. it has a cooler fitted already.

I'm aiming for reliable, minimal lag 200kw at the wheels, will the auto take this?

The car has already been ecutekked so the tune after this mod will be only dyno time.

Keen to hear your ideas/info.

Thanks, J

For the block swap you need to heck that all the oil and coolant galleries line up to the heads, the gearbox bolts line up, and the sump has the same clearance from the crossmember and exhaust.

The auto should take 200kw, but it will drastically reduce the trans life. If I were going to those lengths through an auto I'd get a stage 2 shift kit, give it a better kick.
Built not bought, it's a way of life.

After my EJ20 threw a big end, I upgraded to a EJ257 short motor. 2L heads and all other stock gear bolted straight up.

Without any other mods (still running standard turbo, exhaust and intake) I got 154kw atw (5pd manual box), with peak boost availible from 2400rpm.

If you're looking at running 200kw, the first thing to replace is the tiny factory turbo. It's the major limiting factor for anyone chasing those sort of power numbers.

That's encouraging Brad
I've spoken to a chap at STechnic who has a good reputation in WA and who was keen to take on this conversion.

Did you need new oil pumps etc?

I believe the old oil pump would have been fine to bolt up as well, but I got a new one anyway just for piece of mind.

I dont see a reason why what you've suggested wouldn't go off without a hitch.

Obviously you do need to factor in all the extra ancilary costs like turbo, intake, exhaust etc but I think you'll be very happy with a TS 2.5. I'm sure Doug (STecnic) will look after you, he seems a man of good integrity.
