License Plate

Postby Kook » Mon Oct 04, 2010 7:03 pm

I know this probably sounds stupid but I need to know how to attach my Personalised Plates on my Lib.
The space for the plate is far to small for the plate to actually fit and at present the standard plates are bent so that the screws can reach the body.

Is there a mounting kit I can get to attach them properly or should I do a home job (was thinking maybe longer screws with a couple of spacers to fill out the gap).

Any information would be helpfull as I don't wish to ruin perfectly good plates.

Hard to know what the problem is, what sort of model Liberty do you own?

As a last resort you can probably double sided tape it on so you don't bend your expensive plates, but apparently it's not 'roadworthy' or something if you don't have it secured with screws.

Its a MY01 RX not sure if the issue is model specific but I've searched for a while on the net about it and came up with nothing.
Ummm to explain it better...
On the front bumper there is an indented area where the number plate is meant to go. However the area is about 5-10mm to small to fit the plate in (I'm assuming it wasnt designed for the size of australian plates).

Is it a 7 character WA plate? If so, I'd reckon they are a bit bigger than the nominal number plate size in Australia

-edit- I should try to be helpful too

Anyway, have you thought about some foam rubber behind the plate in the recessed area to space it out to the level of the surrounding bumper bar? Drill/cut holes in the rubber and plate to get the bolts to fit

I know what you're talking about. I noticed this a few months back. My car has a small black bracket that allows the number plate to sit further out from the gap. Not sure where you could get this though... Maybe make one?

I hate the way many plates are mounted with screws through the wrong places, so I mount my own . I call it double mounting, as its simialr to what picture framers call doublemounted - pic goes on one piece, and that mounted to another piece which is mounted to the frame.
My way:- piece of hard ply wood at least 10mm thick (in your case, enough to fit plate wothout beding ends), exactly the right size for the plate. If you need more thickness, use spacers, or a sheet hollowed out where materialnot needed. Drill this so it can use the std car bumper screw holes/fittings, and recess the screw heads into the thickness of the wood/whatever. Then fit the plate to the wood, drill for screws using holes already in the plate.
On my GTB as delivered the front plate (personalized, 3letter, 3 number) was mounted using existing plate holes, but that displaced it downwards 20-25mm, so it projected into the airfolw going into the under bumper openings. I remounted it as above so its top fits neatly into the plate space, and it doesnt hang below the bumper. BTW, its a small Vic plate.

Those brackets seem to be the best option, I'd already asked around Autobarn and Supercheap and they were clueless so I'll check out the wreckers this arvo to try and find some. If it comes up with nothing then I will look at mounting with rubber foam.

For the record they are 5 digit QLD plates but they are the same size as standard 6 digit QLD plates.

Might have been answered but if you have a Jap import, their license plates are smaller, so the aussie plates dont fit. Most people just bend the ends of their plate to fit. Manufacture some sort of brackets or see if its possible to remove the jap-spec holders?
