Key problem

Postby S28 » Wed Sep 08, 2010 12:31 pm

I have a few questions. I have a 2001 liberty RX.
I have an original key with unlock / lock buttons. Unfortunately it has taken a spin in the washing machine and now the central locking does not work.
Can I get a old key of someone and reprogram it?
What controls the immobilizer? Is it the little ferrite covered object in the case corner?
I don't feel like paying $380 from Subaru if possible. What a rip-off!!
Is there anything I should look out for?

Have you replaced the battery after its spin in the washing machine? I would suggest:

1: give it a few days to dry out fully
2: replace the batterry (probably a little button lithium battery)
3: give it a crack

Maybe try that Rice drying technique?
Google it.

Thanks for the replies.
I've replaced the battery. Given it a good scrub with electronic circuit board cleaner.
I've read about the wires inside the interior kick panel but I don't know if I need a working remote to reprogram a new electronics module. I thought I could get a different key from someone and give that a try. Does anyone know if that would work?
Cheers.

What city are you in?
If it's Melbourne, I can check your current key to see if the transmitter is working.

Ric,

Thanks, a very generous offer. Pity I'm in Brisbane.

Cheers,
