meguiars ultimate compound or scratchx2.0?

Postby hollylib » Thu Jul 31, 2014 9:33 pm

hi!
I'm planning on giving my car a massive detail tomorrow. The previous owner left me some lovely little swirl marks on the bonnet and boot. I bought both meguiars scratchx 2.0 and meguiars ultimate compound. after doing a bit of research it seems the compound is the better product to use until i came across a horror story where someone ruined their clear coat. it was probably because they didnt use it right but now I'm worried I'm going to do the same. Has anyone used either one of these products before?

I used the first version of scratchx (plastx?) on my door after some asshole left a paint scuff. Applied blobs of it multiple times and rubbed it with a microfiber towel. Got the scuff off, didn't even mess up the clear coat. Though it was a 2010 model, so the paint and all was fairly new, wouldn't know how it would go with an older car, but I reckon it should be fine.

I've used Scratch X 2.0 on a 2000 Golf and a 2011 Cerato. Got rid of the majority of the scratches for very little outlay/effort. Worth a shot really.

His clearcoat would have to have already been in really bad condition OR he REALLY went to down to do damage. Just use the product sensibly. I've used it on my MY10 for a couple of light scratches too. Doesn't get rid of them 100%, but minimizes them at least (depending on how bad they are)

I'd start with Scratch X 2.0 (don't feel like you could stuff it up with this) and then try Ultimate Compound if it doesn't do the trick.

I used the ultimate compound and it did nothing :( can anyone recommend anything else that might work for me? Or might have to get it professionally detailed maybe?

Pics?

A Random Orbital (Das-6 or similar) with the appropriate pads/compound is probably going to be your best bet.

Holly,
Have a good read of the detailing Q&A. If your scratches are bad, you need a polisher. If its not too bad, then a hand polish will work, BUT, you HAVE to get the right polishing implement. There are a few hand polish pads around, check out waxit and carcareproducts, or give them a call. A simple microfibre won't cut in like I assume you want to. Hamish, the detailing guru, suggested Scholl Concepts to me as an affordable product, I used the S3Gold (but mine wasn't too bad to start with).
