The only way for you to find "the best way" is to get in touch with some people in your state who know their detailers, and see which one is going to benefit you the most in terms of longevity, price and of course distance.

I'm in the same boat, in Melbourne, for my never detailed Obsidian Black GT-B wagon.
Currently getting quotes on pre-detailing, chips, scratches, rash, dents.
Then detailing! Probably paid for, then DIY .

Take your car to Damien and you could never be happier.
Damien not only told me about my paint, but he even showed imperfections on one of my rims, that even I had never noticed before.

Take it to Final Inspection, and speak to damien first before you book it in. Go for a 2 stage pass, and if you have the money 3 stage, but with a black car 1 stage is not enough.

PM Hamish for all questions. He has been through all stages of the whole detailing process. He knows all the best products etc. but in the end as I said already, nothing beats a professional multi stage MACHINE polish like from what Hamish can do.
You will never get the same results with hand polishing, and you are kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

Detailing doesn't have to be very expensive.

If you're in limited budget, buy tools from waxit or zas australia.

Both of them selling great products and very competitive price. Don't forget to look at ebay too, sell a good product with cheaper/new stuff from outside AUS.

Anyway for detailing machine for $300 you get some Dual Action polisher then few pads that will suit for first time in detailing.

Then in that pack, you get some Menzerna polishes.

If you want something like a usual product that can get from supercheap/repco, try to look at meguiars line up. Their consumer product should be good enough since I also still using some of the consumer product.

All in all, for $500, you can use all the tools and chems for more than 5 times polishes. Wax/sealants depends on what you want and budget since this will make your car look very different.

And lastly, keep practice and keep reading. From there you can be a detailer for your own car.

Thinking way, way ahead to the post-detail paint seal, I noticed that carcareproducts has replaced Optimum Opti-Seal with Nanolex Sealant.
Any recommendations/experience?
Also has anyone used Permanon or Gtechniq paint seal products?

Gtechniq Is hard to get a hold of you will never get hold of the top of the range products as they are professioanlly applied products only, Nanolex is fantastic for a non professionally applied nanotechnology coating.

But as said, Once you have fully learnt about machine polish and a good technique and products it will always be better then hand polishing. not opinion, but a fact.

I was my car myself as often as I can get to it, unfortunately sometimes that can be up to a month but generally once every couple of weeks. My plan is for it to be professionally detailed once a year, to get rid of the imperfections and give it a good layer of sealant.

I guess good maintenance is just as important as getting a detail too, if you wash it using crappy products every 2nd week, you will need a detail a lot more often than 1 year, try 3 months
Hamish has some good info on proper maintenance, 2 buckets with grates in the bottom etc etc. That sort of stuff.

Mine gets some very good loving don't you worry

If Hamish_023 came in a 500ml bottle, I'd suggest using that
