touch-up paint curing time?

Postby SegR » Fri Sep 16, 2011 12:44 am

How long does it take small quantities of touch-up paint to cure, really?

I have a few chips and scratches to repair and also plan on spending a day on polishing & waxing the car, but a number of pages I've read online indicate one should wait 20-30 days after applying paint to the car, before waxing. Is this really necessary? (some pages omit this and suggest polishing & waxing nearly immediately... which is at the other end of the stupid scale)

No need to wait 20-30 days. You can even get acrylic touch up paint from some dealers that will dry quicker and look better without a clear ontop.

Unless your spraying it, you can even do it the same day. but I would say leave it overnight to cure.

I did a car on this week, cleaned, decontaminated and then touched up deep scratches, waited for 6-7 hours and then 3000g wet sanded then polished over to get a flat finish.

Before (deep scratches gone through clear)

After (only evident are the two really deep ones)

Man, that is really excellent, I've never seen touch up paint look so good.
Can you get similar results for stone chips that have gone through the paint?

If your patient and don't rush it. Get a fine brush from an art store and layer the paint up thinly instead of blogging a big drop so it doesn't stand out would be my advice.

Thanks Hamish. I'll take your (demonstrably experienced) word over random web pages!

Thanks, I might try it some time. At least on a very out of the way chip in case I mess it up.
