I took my car to autobahn the other day (black my05 3r) and showed them a few scratches. Most are small and light and a couple are a bit deep and I wouldn't expect to get them right out. But when I asked about buying a cutting compound he shook his head and said no way should I use cutters on my car.
He then tried to sell me a touch up product that comes with a black lipstick touch up and a liquid polish which I didn't buy.
Is it true I can't use cutters on my car or is that just completely wrong? Has someone else cut out scratches on their black Lib? And what products did you use or anyone tried that touch up product with the lipstick thing?

Lucky you didnt waste your money on it!!!
The scratches are on the clear coat. So yes you're right on asking for a cutting compound. Clear coats has a limited depth so i would only cut so much.
Once cut remember to seal it with a GOOD QUALITY wax.

If u really want to get your car back to looking like new and dont mind spending a day or even too, then heres what i'd do

1st Wash your car with a good quality shampoo
2nd Clay bar to remove contaminates
3rd Cutting compound
4th Polish
5th Wax
6th Maintain

Oh and to point out... for cutting, i'd use a machine cos i dont think our hands have the pressure like machines. Unless u have arms like Arnold hehehhe

Are you planning to get into car detailing or just want to remove visible scratches?

Sometimes cutting compounds can be tricky to use, & as I'm no expert when it comes to detailing paint etc I've steered clear of them.

I'm guessing the product they tried to sell you is Turtle Wax Colour Cure? If so, that product is good for covering up things like stone chips etc. The Black colour tends to be the best as depending on how deep the chips / scratches are, the lipstick filler tends to go dark, which on a lighter car makes it stand out even more!

for cars with scratched through clear-coat, using a buffer and good buffing compound is a very good way of removing them.

the heat generatedfrom the buffer actually begins to liquify teh clear-coat, allowing it to level itself and fill the scratch
but caution needs to be used, too hot and you'll end up with big white burn marks on your black paint.

If you aren't experienced in detailing I'd suggest taking it to a good detailer who can sort it out for you.

I wash my car every 2 weeks, every 6 months use sealant on it and maintain...however when it comes to clay-baring, polishing etc. I will be taking it to a detailer around once a year.

For your scratches you'll find a good detail from someone who knows what they are doing will produce some pretty surprising results!
