basically it puts a current (can't remember if it is a + or -) through the body of the car to eliminate oxidization. They don't come as standard as far as I know. The unit is part of the detailing package they try and sell you. However, if you live near the beach etc (like I used to) I would say they are a good investment. They also have a row of LEDs that indicate battery strength which is handy.
