Net book advice….. Mini laptop

Postby senator » Tue Jul 20, 2010 1:24 pm

Looking at getting a Net book for data logging on the car.

Any advice on deals……. I have no idea what to look for when getting a net book in terms of specifications.

Thanks in advance

I think they are all much of a muchness to be honest mate... In fact, even the pricing for the is similar.

Just stick to a well known brand like HP, Asus, etc & I'm sure you'll be right :D

Remember, you don't need massive power to do what you want it to do... Maybe get in contact with the Coyote as his seemed to be working rather nicely last Friday.

A car is one of the few applications that I reckon a solid state drive would be beneficial over the contemporary drives. Still a half decent sized SSD would probably double the price of a netbook.

a couple of examples from the Officeworks website:
eepc
HP Mini

For just data logging in the car I don't think you need anything special. You could even use a 3 or 4 year old machine (I'd do a clean install on it first though). XP might be a safer option driver-wise.

Openport 1.3, Openport 2.0, Innovate LC-1 all work fine under Windows 7.

(as well as Windows ever works, anyway)

I upgraded the ssd and ram in my Aspire One. Suggest you get the crappiest computer with the best ssd. It now runs better than it ever did with XP. It flies with EEEBuntu, but some of the RR stuff requires Winblows.

Also go with as many usb and sd card orifices as you can. A 12v car adapter is also a good thing.

FWIW I run Romraider OP2 and LV on an Aspire One too (conventional 2.5 HDD though) - no probs. 120Gb HDD, 1.6Ghz, 1GB ram, 802.11, Dolby and only 1" thick, 3 x USB's too (some are only 2) MS and SD slot, web cam etc

I went the Aspire purely on value for money terms, nothing came close to the same specs for $340

I am under no dis-illusion the Acer is a top level product, I would have preferred Asus or HP as a brand but the Acer was so cheap Battery life is far superior on the Asus too (11 hrs now I think)

Dell Mini 9 for me atm, most of the netbooks are made in the same factory well they used to be anyway. The dell I have has an inbuilt quad band 3G card and GPS module which makes it fully sick you probably can't get it anymore though. I'm still using the tiny stock SSD drive and have a large SD card permanently in the slot. This is XP pro and office 2K3 plus every subaru editing and logging application.
Much of a muchness if you ask me

I'd like to see an App for the ipad that can connect via romraider or an open source connector via usb, that would be pretty cool.
