ABS

Postby Lanks_87 » Tue Apr 18, 2017 12:10 pm

Hi guys,

My battery had a melt down the other week while starting and it's fried something in the car (it got halfway through starting and the battery cut out and then in again), the abs traction control and e brake lights are on and the codes it throws up are:

C0073 - Lateral G Sensor Output
C0071 - Steering Angle Sensor Output
C0074 - Master Cylinder Pressure Sensor Output

I took the car to Subaru for a service and to see what they could do and they've said that I need to change the ABS unit but I'm not convinced with their diagnostic.

just wondering what everyones thoughts are

Get a good battery in there and clear the codes using an obdii plug...
If you do need to replace bits, get them from a local self serve wreckers.
The best way to do this is to look up your parts on eg opposedforces.com, then click the actual part number on that site and look at the usage info for the part: that will list all models that use that part, then peruse the self serve wreckers websites for those cars and get the used parts way cheaper than anywhere else. this is especially true for ABS motors and computers.
Before you go that route, get your factory service manual aka FSM and look up the troubleshooting procedures associated with your CEL codes, that will give you options on either diagnostic procedures, resetting the systems or replacing parts.
How to find your FSM? Download the Euro Legacy links here:
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=sli. ... 8gfH0ZXQAQ
AKA here (but the url is known to change occasionally) :

I replaced the battery straight away, the codes will not clear both Subaru tried and myself (Using a friends snap on scan tool)

OK see above edit and get stuck into troubleshooting using the FSM info :)
Also what year/model/grade etc is your Lib?
Kinda crucial info if you're looking for help.

I'd say the issue may be with your BCM/BIU as thats the computer that manages those sensors.

Unfortunately those codes can't be cleared using an OBDII tool. I got a Steering Angle sensor Error a while ago, when I pulled the steering wheel off. It was just an alignment issue, not even a faulty sensor, but I had to take it to Subaru to clear the error.

Check Engine Lights are the only ones that OBDII tools can clear. The Traction Control/ABS module requires the Subaru Select Monitor (SSM, a 3k+ Laptop that Subaru has). I even bought a special cable and ran FreeSSM, but that didn't help. Although, I didn't have any error codes using the Headlight & Trip Meter function to show error codes in the Dashboard Instrument Display. I just had a Stability Control Warning Light.

So if Subaru tried to clear the errors but couldn't, there's a good chance you'll need a Part.

Thanks for the help guys, it's a 2009 gen V so there isn't too many of them at the self serve wreckers (unless I go to a Subaru wrecker)

Try this for a GenV FSM: http://jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/Legacy%20Outback/
That's from a quick search: they're out there!
I'd be doing a lot of googling before committing funds to parts...
Depending on where you are located (???) Mordy wreckers in Melb might be a good source for parts.

Thanks heaps mate!
The staff at Subaru seemed as though they wanted to get rid of me and quoted $7200 for a new ABS unit so I'm not too sure if they were giving me the most accurate information (I'd hope the abs unit is harder to kill) it's also a lot of work and money (I'd never pay the $7200 btw) if it doesn't fix the problem. I got a sat nav headunit from a wreckers in mordialloc so I'll reach out to them and see what they know or could offer.

Cheers

It might be tricky to trace back the diagnostics without the full download of the FSM, in past I've had luck searching the full PDF from within Acrobat but also using Mac finder w/ preview mode...

Anyhow my next step was just to google the diagnostics eg
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=VDC% ... 8gfql7rYAw
And got a bunch of results inc. this one:
/car_docs/Subaru/Legacy_OB/Chassis/VDC(diag)_Vehicle_Dyn_Control_(Diag).pdf
Download the pdf and search those diagnostic codes within for clues.
Like I mentioned: you want to pinpoint the affected part before spending on replacements, since the source was possibly an electrical fault (battery issues) I'd include the BCM as a possible source of the fault.

Thats: VDC(diag)-76,78, 83, 86

Which brings us to: DTC C0052 MOTOR/MOTOR RELAY MALFUNCTION

https://www.google.com.au/search?q=DTC+ ... 8ge6iI-ICw

and this: (something something relays... relay replacement is a relatively cheap fix)
http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.p ... 26651.html

and also this: (rodents ate wiring/brake light switch)
https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showth ... ?t=2821791

and here (faulty ground connection lol)
http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/top ... -2000-obw/

So do the research before committing to anything, defo grab a multimeter and do the test, and follow up on the relay thing.
Above all keep an open mind and let google do the hard lifting for you, not your wallet lol.

I'm only scratching the surface due to not owning a GenV lol. But from a quick search I'd say defo check the related relays looms & grounds.

Thought I'd drop back in to let everyone know how I fixed this.
Turns out it was the ABS pump. I installed a second hand one from the wreckers and it immediately went back to normal.

Awesome, how'd you diagnose the specific fix?

I ran out of options (well at least there were no obvious faults) so I trusted that what Subaru was telling me about the ABS pump being damaged was true. I also had a chat to a wrecker in Moorabbin and he suggested that it was most likely the ABS pump.
