Thanks.

Specifically I'm looking for an example that uses a passive hdmi cable and that automatically displays that output when connected. Not sure if those are mutually exclusive.

The SGS i9000 is a great phone/btSsm host but the tv out function is tricky to fully automate.

Question time:

Q:
You mentioned it can do Rom Raider logging.

A:
Yes it can do either:

Romraider logging (on a laptop) if the btssm bluetooth plug is used via a virtual bt port (I've not tried this myself)

Or it can use a tactrix plug as the obdII interface if you have usb otg on your android device.

Q:
What's the chance it can do flashing too? (would it mean no more need to borrow a Tactrix?)

A:
Neither of the options in the first question can be used with btssm bt plug for flashing: at this time.

Flashing is only supported with ecuflash and a tactrix.

So your best bet is an android device with otg and a tactrix and a laptop with ecuflash for flashing.

Then get the btssm plug later for convenience.

Q:
Does it have fuel temp and exhaust gas temp as sensors?

A:
I have suggested to the developer a method for adding external sensors but currently the only integrated solution for both btssm and romraider is external sensors plugged into each heads deleted tgv sensor wiring.

Or via usb and plugins in romraider... or via pin8 or the mini headphone jack when standalone logging (this is the slowest available option) is used.

Straight from the LGT btSsm thread:

V1.2.9:
new feature: added backup/restore for vehicles/fields/gauges for all profiles. In Settings, see Backup & Restore
fix: IAM gauge for 16 bit ECUs had incorrect range (djpast)

V1.3.0:

for 6 cyl vehicles: added misfire fields for cyl5 and cyl6 (Perscitus)
bug fix: new backup feature could say "backup failed" (bigBADbenny)

V1.3.1:

new feature: added digital gauge option. to access, tap field name in field chooser, choose gauge type (djpast)
bug fix: occasionally a small log file would get created when vehicle turned off but app still connected (djpast)

This just gets better!

Coming soon:

Mr Matt Mcleod has been recommending btSsm to many of his customers, especially those with earlier Subarus that otherwise have limited logging options.

He's promised to give me an updated list of ADM compatible models soon, starting with MY01 WRX iirc

Also: see the first post for a link to the btSsm manual which contains this easter egg:

Semi-hidden feature: Long-press the record button to toggle a special WOT auto-log option. When enabled, it will start logging whenever you floor the throttle, and stop after you release it

Just playing with the software at the moment (using the tactrix/usb interface). Really like it...

What would be a good "baseline" for things to monitor/log/alert?

IAM - Monitor and Alert if falls below 1.000
Boost - Guage, Monitor, Log and Alert if over-boost
FCK - Monitor and Log
FLKC - Monitor and Log
Timing - Guage, Monitor and Log
WGDC - Monitor and Log
AFR - Guage, Monitor and Log
MAF G/S - Monitor and Log
RPM - Guage, Monitor and Log
Speed - Guage, Monitor and Log
Load G/Rev - Monitor and Log
Throttle Plate % - Monitor and Log

Am I missing anything? Is adding too many things to monitor/log a bad thing? (could it bog down?)

Also here are some custom sensors which could be useful:

===== AFR resistance in Ohms =====
Name: AFR res (Ohms)
Addr: 000044
Length: 1
Float: (unchecked)
Formula: x
Dec places: 0
Gauge min: 0
Gauge max: 100
gauge # every: 10

This indicates exhaust temperatures... 33 to 28 to 25 Ohms indicates normal temperatures (250 to 500 to 700 degrees) and 22 Ohms is really hot (around 900).
EDIT: The Formula -1613LN(x) + 5881 will convert ohms into approximate exhaust temps in celsius... I'm not sure if this works in BtSsm yet...

===== Fuel temperature in degrees C =====
EDIT - I can't get this one working... does it work for anyone else?
Name: Fuel temp (degC)
Addr: 00002A
Length: 1
Float: (unchecked)
Formula: x-40
Dec places: 0
Gauge min: -40
Gauge max: 120
gauge # every: 20

The same parameters as Matt's Rom Raided logger profile should be fine :)

Exhaust temp? That's a good one :)

Now that gauges are able to be backed up I'm going to experiment with different sets and dash configs for my car.
Plus change my smaller gauges to the digital only type :)

Hm where do I find the digital gauges?

Is there a way to show Target Timing as well as just Timing? (effectiviely the difference would be Learned Timing? (is that how Learned Ignition Timing worked with the ECUds.

Yes check the manual or BtSsm thread on lgt linked in the first few posts here for moar infos... You'll need to make a custom gauge based on the relevant Logger def and scaling etc.

But afaik gauges or fields that reference other parameters are not yet supported... Yet I could be wrong there.
You could do this in xl or megalogviewer afaik.
Please share your progress :)

new feature: added digital gauge option. to access, tap field name in field chooser, choose gauge type (djpast)

Here's another custom field...

Name: Learned Timing (deg)
Addr: 000028
Length: 1
Float: (unchecked)
Formula: (x-128)/2
Dec places: 1
Gauge min: 0
Gauge max: 50
gauge # every: 5

Although I think we can make the min -10 or something to account for pulled timing...

I wonder if it is possible to tap directly into sensors such as cam and crank?

V1.3.4:

changed recent field alert feature to play an alarm sound and change gauge color to red, as popup was too disruptive (djpast, xt2005bonbon)
enhancement for H6 vehicles: LV will contain 2nd row for fuel correction that represents bank 2 (Perscitus, satogixxer)
bug fix: FKC and FLKC gauges (both analog/digital) now display decimals (xt2005bonbon) More info on alarms settings.

Just got an 04 GT auto and was disappointed that torque app and my BT elm327 doesn't work.
This looks so much better.

Can anyone tell me, do the $12 eBay KKL vagcom cables work with btssm?

It's right there in the first post :)
But like cheap elm327 bt plugs, buy from a known, good, local vendor.
And your android device might need to support OTG usb...

I did see that in the first post about compatability with Tactrix and KKL cables, but on ebay, Tactrix cables are $275 and and I found KKL cables for $12.
Thats a big difference in price, thought I might need to spend more to get it to work on a Subaru, the ones advertised talk about working with Audi and VW models, nothing about Subaru.

Indeed. :)
So your research would center around kkl cables and vendors that have product known to be compatible with Subarus, and testing your android for OTG compatibly using the app linked in the op.
Kkl can be hit and miss for flashing with ecuflash, but that's not an issue with regard to btSsm as flashing is currently not supported.

It's not something I want to research in depth, but a quick search revealed its possible to modify a kkl into a fully functional Tactrix 1.3 clone: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthr ... 156&page=6 and the following page...

Unless you're keen to diy, the time/$$ may be better spent on a BtSsm plug and or a Tactrix 1.3.

My Samsung SII is apparently OTG compatible, none of the Australian ebay KKL vendors mention Subaru on their ads. Would that matter?
This is the specs of a $24 one
Supports VAG-COM version 409.1 or older
Fully support dual K-lines
Fully backwards compatible with older cars using a single K-line or K plus L
LED light shows cable communication status
Electronic Isolator built in to prevent damage to car and computer

I will probably still get the bluetooth adapter eventually
