Upgrade to 3 port boost solenoid need tuning

Postby Insight » Fri Apr 18, 2014 10:51 am

Hey everything,

Recently brought a 2005 GT 2.0T with a mild modded engine.

I contacted the company that previously tuned the car and it was recommended when tuned to have the boost solenoid updated to a 3 port.

I have a friend selling a 3 port boost solenoid that came off his liberty (plugs straight into standard wiring)

Does it require a re-tune, and if so why.

(I'm new to this thing and I like to know why/what happens if things arent done correctly).

Your help will would be great.

you require a re tune to adjust waste gate duty cycle ( this controls and manages the amount of boost throughout the rev range safely ). There would be other tables in the tune that would need to be adjusted to work well with the waste gate duty cycle changes.

you could install the new solenoid and drive it....just don't drive it hard.....if you do? you may over boost...and your car will probably pop a cel e.g. P0244 ( or go into limp mode ) .....or worse case.....turbo goes boom....or engine goes boom...

Thank you very much, that makes sense.

Stock one will hold out for the time being.

Is 19psi a lot of boost for a liberty? I'm currently trying to restore the car to safe/reliable running condition

18psi is the best max boost

Max boost also depends on how much ignition timing used! If u have heaps of timing up top u might have less boost, if u have more boost u might have less ignition timing. It's a balance with them

Thank heaps!

Safe to say a retune might be on the cards in future.

Last silly questions if I was to attach a BOV onto the front mount piping because it currently just plugged off, would that require re-tune?

You currently have no BOV at all?

One way to increase the safety in this situation would be to connect the compressor boost pressure outlet directly to the wastegate vac port so the car is limited to wastegate pressure, till it can be sorted and tuned. :)

Without knowing how to post pictures, the currently setup has the old top mount intercooler BOV PIPING plugged off (runs back into turbo Inlet.

The now front mount intercooler piping has a spot for BOV (top right hand side) but it has been plugged off. The car makes the (VL turbo flutter noise)

In the world of flutter its a massive debate as to what damage and likelihood of damage can potentially occur/will occur. But in your case having no proper BOV managing the excess pressure coming off boost/throttle(esp when fanging it) cant be good in my opinion...especially if it sounds like a VL turbo in a Subaru......for me that doesn't sound / would look right.....xr6 turbo maybe....but not on a liberty...and certainly not a Subaru :P

I couldn't agree more! I can't stand the sound , it just doesn't sit right.

I want to return to a simple BOV, is this something I can easy fit without requiring a retune?

Should be possible and with pics of all the piping and blocked off bits we can advise.
Get a flickr or photo bucket account or email me ;)

So for starters, you just need to find a BOV with a basic tubular inlet port, and a 30mm return for the stock return pipe.
And also the vac line to actuate the BOV. Luckily the turbo has the stock compressor outlet trumpet, so returning to stock will be a little easier if required. ;)

Hi good pics. Looks like previous owner has done half jobs

Get it professionally looked at and checked even the turbo has no heat shield etc

What a real dodgy FMIC install.....get that cleaned up and sorted out asap with the bov...

I personally don't like how the MAF is positioned like that...being sideways...
