100 Octane Fuel

Postby peadya100 » Sun Jan 12, 2014 7:15 pm

Hey guys,
Ive noticed that united service stations have now got 100 octane fuel. Has anyone tried it? Good or bad? Would it be bad for my engine if its tuned for 98 octane?

I don't have a turbo however my car was tuned on bp98.

Been using United p100 for months without issues. Don't notice a difference in any way (price is about the same, fuel economy seems the same).

But this is probably not relevant since you've got a 2.5T.

Higher octane fuel won't hurt in fact it will give you more headroom in your tune. If your 98 tune was pushing the limits of safe then running 100 will make things safer. Only downside is you won't be using 100% of the fuels potential. If it is good fuel that is.

My main concern was safety... so thats good!
I wonder if it would be worth getting tuned on p100?
Its a lot more common than eflex or e85 (in sydney anyway) and id imagine thered be a slight performance gain???

A lot of people are tuned on 100 (myself included)

Just gives that extra bit of headroom for tuning because it ignites cooler.

Adrian youre 100% correct for petroleum based fuels, but when you're talking ethanol enhanced (as united p100 is), then it changes the dynamic of the fuel slightly.

Pure Ethanol requires 30% more volume to ignite and create the same cylinder pressure. In a nutshell this means you run the risk of leaner mixtures if you haven't adjusted fuel trims. With p100 being only 10% ethanol, this doesn't pose a major risk but if ethanol content increases then it does.

Something to keep in mind, although as some have said the p100 essentially gives you a buffer.

Thanks mick! I had no idea it was 10% ethanol. Thats not very well advertised at the bowser. I better get my tune looked at before I start using it.

Glad to help

One thing to note thought is even with higher octane fuels that are non ethanol based, if your car is say ideally setup for 91 fuel, running 98 all the time is not necessarily good. The slower burning fuel could potentially induce knock if timing is not remapped accordingly.

Ok, i spoke to my tuner about P100 tuning and whether or not its worth it. Surprisingly he said yes! I was expecting him to laugh at me.
He said he sees 5% increase in power on average... sometimes more, sometimes less.

Pretty cheap too as its just a touch up - fuel and timing need trims.

Great bang for buck for a liberty too... 10wkw for the cost of a touch up tune :D

Used some of the United stuff for the first time the other day... Lack of alternative. Didn't feel as good as fresh 98 from shell or bp. Maybe older fuel but i am suss on ethanol so i blamed that...
Getting a kido tune soon so will be on 98 for that.

I've used the United P100 and didn't like it on my 98RON tune. I got quite a bit lower mileage on it compared to running my preferred Caltex or BP 98.

Speaking with some people I know that are running it, if the tune is tweaked for it, it's good in hot weather especially as the ethanol in it adds to the cooling.
Want great safety from your fuel? Get an E85 tune, man. It's magical!
