VF23 versus VF46 on 2.5T

Postby Shaheenis » Sun Nov 10, 2013 11:30 am

Hi guys, not sure whether this is the right place to post but if have been considering at some stage upgrading my turbo to a VF52 and at the same time I would probably upgrade the TMIC to a Hyperflow or similar. I am also in the process of trying to sell a spare VF23 from my other wagon when it occurred to me it may be a comparable upgrade to the VF52. Is this the case? I had it running on a 2.2ltr and thought it may be a little small for a 2.5.

If so, what is involved in fitting it as the VF46/52 has a 2 bolt flange?

Also, if I did this could I use a different more common aftermarket TMIC without flanged inlet?

Cheers in advance.

Has no one done this? It seems impossible to find anything on actual flow rates in CFM for the VF46 although I have learned that the compressor design in the VF46 is improved efficiency versus the older VFs. 5-arc scroll design or something. --> http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.p ... 1179245648

IHI VF 23 ------------- 423 CFM at 14.7 PSI

========= 422 CFM max flow for a 2 Liter at .85 VE pressure ratio 2.0 (14.7 PSI) 7000 RPM =======
========= 526 CFM max flow for a 2.5 Liter at .85 VE pressure ratio 2.0 (14.7 PSI) 7000 RPM =======

Hi mate interesting thought

A vf52 will out run a vf46 they just run out of steam and the vf52 keeps pulling.

My mate had this upgrade and it really moves !! Tourque down low very punchy also :)

So does that reduce the max flow figures above? If so by what factor roughly?

The airflow calculation is only to demonstrate what your airflow requirements will be

A vf23 would be a downgrade I believe.

The VF23 is definately bigger than a VF46, I am just not sure where it sits in comparison with a VF52 (which I would prefer but $$$). The VF23 has a P20 exhaust housing (versus I believe a P18 on VF52) and can pump out around 220kws on a 2ltr at 18psi with supporting mods. Not sure how this translates to a 2.5ltr or the complexity in fitting one (which could be quite simple) and hence why I started this thread. I would prefer if someone just sold me a VF52 ;).
