Determining if it is piston knock or not is not a laptop solution, nor is it relying too much on a laptop. I'm sure you agree. Yet you go and post silly comments.

Robbks wrote:most of you blokes rely so much on what the laptop is telling you that you forget there's lots of mechanical parts in there.

Oh well, stirring shit is a bit more fun than everyone just working together I guess

Robbks wrote:Not getting angry at anyone.
But you've got some relationship or thoughts about Mick being totally infallible and it just makes you appear ignorant.

As has been said above, could just be a rattling heat shield.
[insert sarcasm] But wouldn't he have tightened the bolts up properly after the dump install?
I mean, cars from the factory don't have rattling heat shields after a month!
Surely if Mick worked on it, there's no way it would come loose [/sarcasm]

Understood. Certainly not saying mick is perfect. Just giving credit where credit is due.
And on your point - you can appear a bit ignorant as well, when dismissing valid advice. Oh well I guess I started it  Sorry.

(I was dismissing WG flutter as a cause for the knock sensor being tripped as per the KiDo thread mentioned here, so we may have been on different pages there?)

Too much sarcasm for me.

not as silly as it sounds..
My uncle had an old Hilux that was hard to start one day.
thought nothing of it, few days later there was a funny smell from under the bonnet
A snake had curled up in the fan shroud next to the radiator, chopped him to bits when it started! :bad:

ha ha we have sliping belts on cars at work and i always say there is a bird under the bonnet

I think youre right.. i noticed a while ago that you both seemed to be on different pages
Simple case of miscommunication.

Although you guys might not agree, the possible causes being thrown around actually help me get closer to a diagnosis. If nothing else it gives me a few places to check before i get to MSR, and perhaps even a few things for MSR to look at first. :D

Well the noise is gone!
MSR found it to be a cracked mount on the turbo heat shield. He welded it back together and now the noise is no more :D

He also discoverd that my MAF readings were different now to when he tuned it.. turned out my MAF sensor was gunked up due to my K&N filter oil. So cleaned it and paper filter is back in. Anyone want to buy a near new K&N filter?

Oh and he fixed the rev limiter issue too... I think he said he tapered off the power up there to stop it happening or something like that.

That's great mate!

My new k&n filter came over oiled as well, but much better after letting it sit and dry up, since they package it in airtight plastic, hence it never dries until open. So all good now :)

What was the rev limiter issue? If you don't mind me asking...since a few auto guys tuned by different tuners are all having similar. I think I've noticed mine revs till 7000-7200 on WOT. ..

Not sure the cause to be honest. I think maybe the better performance just allows it to rev quicker or something......

It's AVCS related
as you go from 1600rpm to 2000rpm, the AVCS system advances the intake cam by about 30 extra degrees. and as such the mechanism on teh front of teh camshaft rattles as it whips around quickly
see maps of AVCS angle here
