Good stuff!
Is your car tuned by Kido, or are you just looking to get it tuned while youre at it?

Could you advise if this noise is constant or is more likely to occur in hotter weather.

I know some of the guys in Victoria complained of this noise on hotter days. Since it's gotten cooler the noise seems to have stopped.

Given that symptom, made me think it has less to do with AVCS and more to do with either fueling, EGT, or IAT compensations.

I've also been in other H6 tuned cars which show no AVCS tick sound. This is from a variety of tuners too.

Hence I said it can be removed through tuning.

I can tell when it's a concerning noise and know more about Subaru engine noises than half the mechanics around here.
it only does it at specific load and rpm conditions indicated by the ACVS advance maps posted before.
i.e doesn't do it when free revving

I'm always interested in these mysterious diagnostic powers that people believe some mechanics possess.

Depends on the mechanic. I often have people complain about noises and I can hear more than one I often drive with them so they can point it out!

I have a similar problem at the moment with my MY07 2.0R.

While under load (going up steep hills, or pushing the accelerator hard while in low RPM) it makes a pretty unsettling rattle around the 1700-2000 RPM range. I can avoid it with smooth driving but it seems to be happening more frequently now.

It's similar to the heatshield rattle I had in my 99 Impreza, but a lower/deeper sound. Not sure if I'm imagining it but the car may be struggling a bit.

Could anyone direct me to points to check under the hood / underneath the car?

Many thanks!

ive been told my matt from kido tune that it is the passenger side timing tensioner that causes this little rattle from low RPM!

Mate, can you read the relevant information.
he has a 2.0R which is a DOHC EJ20. which has a timing belt and not a chain,
so you won;t hear the chain rattle from the tensioner losing oil pressure.

xdirex:
I reckon it's just high-load, low rpm pinging.
What sort of fuel do you use? these cars need 95RON minimum to keep them happy.

2.0L has an engine load limiter, cuts fuel pulse at low rpm with high load

I've never used anything less than 95, and tried a tank of 98 the other day with the same results.

When I say under load, I'm not exactly thrashing it, just taking off on medium slopes, etc. In fact, if I plant it it will happily skip past the trouble spot without making the noise.

Appreciate any suggestions before I drop (more) cash on a mechanic...
