Logger dropping out/RPM hesitates?

Postby alexeiwoody » Sat Apr 06, 2013 12:18 pm

I had a slightly technical question for you guys, if you could answer it, that would be great!

Whenever I am logging my car during WOT 3rd gear pulls – the logger laptop software drops out. If using an SD card straight into the Tactrix OBDII port – impossible values are recorded in that area for a few seconds.

This happens only on WOT, at around 5000rpm in 3rd gear. 1st and 2nd gear aren’t plagued by this issue.

My initial thoughts were electrical interference – so the engine grounding wires were inspected, brand new car battery, new battery grounding terminals, cables etc. Ferrite chokes on the OBDII wires – nothing has helped.

I’ve tried logging fewer parameters – so far it manages to hold only one parameter without dropping out. This is really useless as other same model ECU/cars seem to have no problem holding 17+, and mine holds 20+ very well as long as I keep the throttle under 90% in 3rd at high rpm.

Different Tactrix OP 2.0 have been used, different laptops and software like EcuEdit have also been used. Same issue.

The rpm needle also hesitates for a second around 5000 when on WOT - someone said it could be related to coil packs/connection.

Please help!!! (if possible :)

Cheers,
Alexei

I have a similar issue, what actually happens is the logger drops out completely for a space of time, usually between 5,500-6,500 rpm then comes back on...

I have the same issue when using Openport 2.0
Never have the issue using cheap VAG-COM cable. So now all my logging is via vag-com to the laptop using romraider.

That's disappointing to hear given how expensive an open port is.

Yup, standalone logging to the OP micro SD card is great in theory... just doesn't work well for my (wife's) car! However, that being said I setup logging for Shav's MY07 and it seemed to be ok. To tell the truth though I never analysed the logs close enough to ensure it didn't happen.

I don't use the SD card, I log it straight to Romraider, that is where I get the dropouts...

I have seen the drop outs on SD card so it's not immune there. I haven't seen them on rom raider though, although I barely have used that to log my car.

Meh, i try to avoid logging on the street. In cars like ours it is federal 'pound me in the ass' prison if you get caught doing it.

Thanks guys,

I'll try using the vag com cable, do you guys know a cheap place to buy one?

Also on advice of some tuners going to replace plugs today and check a good connection of the coils. The 5000rpm area is meant to be the climax of the electrical charge and that seems too much of a coincidence

Mine reconnects same as yours Jerome, just to tell me everything is cool at 6500....thanks tactrix :D

Care to share the fix.

Was it shielding your cables from stereo cross talk, ferrite chokes or something else.

Were any Zener diodes used in the fix?

Ferrite chokes on the obdII wires helped, new battery also helped stabilise the connection - but new spark plugs fixed the issue.

Just for reference I had new spark plugs put in but my issue was still present. I might try those Ferrite chokes / clean the battery terminals up.
