ODBII diagnostic adapter - cheap ebay units

Postby chanham » Tue Mar 19, 2013 2:31 pm

Hey all,

I'm looking into getting a small ODBII adapter to gain info like acceleration, fuel stats, engine codes etc. Not after to do any tuning stuff, just to learn a little more about my car!

Just purchased myself a android tablet & want to get a little Bluetooth OBDII scanner.

Is something this cheap (just an example of one of the many ones they sell on ebay) gonna do any damage to my car? :

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ELM327-OBDII ... 456wt_1163

Id match it with a compatible android app.

Anyone got any thoughts?

cheers!

I have that one ^

It was good at the start but now I can't get it to work. Not sure if it's cos im now running cyanogenmod, or because I left it in the car for a long time without using it maybe.

Anyway, doesn't work any more, gonna try fix it tonight. It still pairs with my phone but Torque (the only app worth considering to view info on your phone) won't talk to it.

I bought a usb model of the same adapter from that seller. had it for a while now. it works with Centrafuse, DashCommand, and ScanTool. If your going to have this connected to the car all the time I'd suggest buying an OBD2 extension cable, as it will get in the way of your accelerator foot. I bought this one recently so the OBD2 adaptor can be tucked away in the plastic under dash cover.

Why not step up a notch to the UltraGuage?
The UltraGuage will show you every sensor fitted to your car by Subaru and clear codes too. I bought one as the
OEM Temp gauge is not the greatest tool in my dash (or any Subaru I believe) and I love it.

I just bought one of those cheapo bluetooth ones and will use Torque app.

Why not step up to the ultragauge..?
because the app + dongle are cheaper
the app can go on my 10" tablet or 4" phone

sucked in for buying a sh!t phone that can't do anything.

I mean you can;t even plug the POS into a PC and drag photo's across onto it
and good luck finding an app to stream anything from a NAS drive.
Or god forbid you don't need a PC and what to transfer some music around.
