I miss having caltex in canberra with Eflex.

United E85 is too expensive. It really should be closer to $1.10.

Just filled up at Caltex at Moorebank.
95.9CPL less 2CPL for StarCard.

I do not have a kind word for United....

Oh wow, the price increases are crazy everywhere!
It's amazing how much cheaper Caltex is though. Shame we don't have them selling E85 here.

But I think we're still in the lead here in North QLD, with 2 Uniteds (a new one opened) charging 154.9 for E85. Another few cents higher than last month.

For those in Sydney using Caltex, just be mindful that they have dropped their ethanol content to around 66 - 67%

I have been using it for over 5 years and it was always 70 - 71%

BillyCorgi, out of interest, did you replace the fuel filters before running E85 (I guess you would have)? Was it straight away, or after a few initial tanks (or mixed tanks)?
So that build up is from only 20,000km :?. I've probably done less than 10,000km on E85, and I haven't checked my filter since then. But my previous 170,000km filter wasn't dirty at all, so that shows how much gunk E85 cleans up.

The fuel filter and inlet sock were changed when installing the 265 lph pump.
Service records say
E85 Tune - 23rd FEB 2015 @ 131,790km
Replace Fuel Pump (with E85 compatible unit) 132,850km

So that was after a month to six weeks and when the third tankfull had dropped below 1/2 full.

The car now has 152,360
So maybe you should check your filters and inlet sock?

BTW, I also just inspected the inlet sock on the sub-level sensor side.

Thanks Billy, interesting!
I'll check mine this week and also try to work out exactly how many kms I've done since switching to E85.
I wanted to pull the rear seats out anyway, and install some Dynamat underneath to reduce the extra noise the aftermarket pump makes.

Here's a question someone might be able to answer. Would you bother with the Subaru Fuel Additive that the dealer usually uses at a service, even though I run E85?

They gave me the bottle but didn't know if they should put it in, since they know I run E85.

Would it do anything over the already strong cleaning properties of E85?

I'd go ahead and use it anyway.

I've taken apart one of my old ej25 blocks after running e85 for a year and still found the combustion chamber to not be super clean ( pretty clean though ).

Just that extra bit of cleaning every once in a while would be good if you don't pay extra for it.

However if it's at an additional cost, then I wouldn't bother. Whatever effect it has wouldn't make any noticible difference to anything.

Given the solvent nature of ethanol, I dare day the additive is pointless

Reality is that one bottle of additive is going to do very little to break down the sludge / carbon build up in the fuel and inlet tract / combustion chamber. Ethanol will do it within a few tanks

The additive is a solvent that doesn't detract from the octane rating of normal dinosaur fuels. This won't do a damn thing to the e85 except some volume.

Cheers guys. I'll tip it in this time, but it might not do much long term.

I pulled my Filter today after 10,000km on E85 (with only 1-2 tanks of 98 in between). That's over a time period of 9months because I drive my work van a lot more.

When it was wet, it looked pretty dirty, because of the dark colour.
But I cut it open and there was only a tiny bit of fine debris in the middle.
And the 2nd picture shows it once it had dried, and it looks pretty good 8) .

The other thing to keep in mind is, that's not the actual fuel filter.

So worth replacing the fuel filter within the fuel pump assembly and cutting the old one open to look at also.

Example :

The reason I mention this is to make sure nobody wastes their time changing just the fuel sock and ignoring the actual filter.
