RomRaider EcuFlash Learning View Tactrix Tuning/Logging Q/A

Postby bass_straitener » Tue Dec 20, 2011 11:20 pm

G'day Guys, I've decided to start this topic as I've taken coyote's (Tony) advice and bought myself a Tactrix cable and setup my laptop to log data to monitor my ECU parameters to better understand ECU tuning and exactly what my car is doing.

I've read through nearly all the information from both the ROMRaider and ECUFlash sites and whilst I've gained a lot of knowledge there are questions that I have that I thought others might also like answered. I'm hoping those who are into open ECU tuning or data logging can share their tips and tricks for Liberties.

My first question is about the parameters I should be monitoring and logging to give me an accurate depiction of how my car is behaving.

Secondly how long should I log for at a time for data to be relevant.

Thanks

For what to log, have a look here at the Romraider "how to" forum

and in particular here:

Once you've made the logs, read:
http://www.romraider.com/forum/viewtopi ... =33&t=6156
"How To: Read Data Logs "

Then also get familiar with the use of Learning View
http://www.romraider.com/forum/viewtopi ... =33&t=5371
"How To: Understand And Use Learning View's Knock Information "

All of these can be found here:
http://www.romraider.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=33

Hope this helps a bit ;)

Thanks Lee for the links. I've had a read and am feeling much better about getting setup and logging something worthwhile.

Also is there anyone in Melbourne who is currently logging data and can spare a bit of time to give me a more hands on tutorial? I live in Blackburn, but am willing to travel to get some help. Just thought I'd put it out there.

Thanks again.

Another quick question that I couldn't find the answer to.

How long a drive do I need to go for to collect suitable log data. How big a file do I need? Is there any particular type of driving style I should adopt.

For example, I'm looking at going to Phillip Island on Boxing Day. The drive is an hour and 45 mins. Is this too long a drive to be logging data on? Will the file size be so big it won't open?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Bruce, the answer to all those questions is "depends".

If you are logging knock at WOT, 3 seconds can be a long log. If you are logging AFR corrections to dial in your MAF tables, an hour or two is brilliant.

I've made some very big log files that are thousands of lines long. They are just csvs and whether or not you can open then will depend on your pc hardware and software.

If doing a long log, remember to use the laptop to start logging rather than the demister, get a 12 volt car adapter for the laptop and make sure it doesn't go to sleep.

I suggest you have a crack at the RR MAF tab on your long drive to check the closed loop air AFRs and how they relate to air flow sensor scaling.

Then again, just doing a few learning views is a good start. Just make that start and build from there.

I would run a 3rd gear pull from 2000 rpm to redline a couple of times and maybe 10 minutes of your usual commuting. That should be enough to start you in the right direction. If you feel like drive out to Sunbury some time I would be happy to show you how to log and maybe start to tweak your tune.

Thanks Bryce for the offer. I'll PM you after the Christmas madness to arrange a time to come out.

Well after my first CEL last night I've decided to get on with logging and trying to understand WTF is going on.

I did a bit of reading and this morning on the way to work I logged for the first time with RomRaider. I've attached the log for opnions from people more knowledgeable.

I'm also going to get Learing View happening and see what I can gain from it.

So here is my first log file. Any opinions?

I'll be putting up a Learning View screenshot tomorrow. Just thought I'd drive for a week before checking.

I just had a quick look through your log but found it hard to get anything useful from it.

Try logging these parameters:

A/F Correction(%)
A/F Learning(%)
A/F Sensor #1(AFR)
Engine Load (1 byte) (g/rev)
Engine Speed (RPM)
Feedback Knock Correction(degrees)
Fine Learning Knock Correction (degrees)
IAM
Ignition Total Timing
Injector Duty Cycle(%)
Intake Air Temperature
Manifold Relative Pressure(corrected)(bar)
Mass Airflow (g/s)
Primary Wastegate Duty Cycle
Throttle Opening Angle(%)
Vehicle Speed (kmh)

Then do a 3rd gear pull, start just under 2000rpm and go through to 100kmh (or close to redline if you have a private road to use)
Stopping is not optional!
