connecting to obdII for diagnosing codes and data logging

Just wondering if someone was willing to give me a list of steps to connect my OpenPort 1.3U cable to OBDII connector for my 2005 GT liberty- for diagnosing codes and data logging. I dont want to stuff up the ECU and do it incorrectly.
