E85 in oil would have a negligible effect on corrosion especially when mixed with oil, remember E85 has corrosion inhibitors in it. I would be more worried about it's hygroscopic properties than it's corrosive properties.

Cheers guys, I'm looking into some oil testing places. It was pretty black. I should mention I changed the oil after going to E85 initially. That would've only been 200km or so of driving though, but that didn't clean much out at all...

Not sure if serious or trolling...water in your fuel doesn't cause sludge to get dislodged into your oil...:o

I noticed the oil was noticeably blacker than it usually is with the same oil type after 5000km. I'm under the impression E85 burns more completely and hence has less carbon residue so I'm at a loss trying to understand this.

Can anyone enlighten me? :)

Also, is it safe to say the Subaru fuel additive is now completely redundant on E85?

I would hazard a guess that your carbon deposits have just been cleaned once and for all

Dump it, refill and take a sample in 1000kms

Winner, except that after half a dozen years of buildup it may take a few changes before it is clean.

So does running E85 negate the need for the Upper Engine Cleaner spray??
If so, would just a tankfull or two give it a decent clean to the same effect?

All of a sudden I'm interested in temporarily running e85 just to decarbonise my 200k old engine :D

Worried it may become addictive :P

Is it possible on a DW65c, stock injectors and low boost?

I agree, it is addictive. :P
Ive been running 85 for a few months but recently changed back to 98 for a while cause it was such a bitch to start on cold mornings. See, ive just had the old h6 replaced (HG issues) with a very low km jobbie, and wondered if I should run a tank of 85 thru it to basically clean it out rather than shell out for cans of UE cleaner.
So will it have the same effect?

Yes, stock injectors are more than adequate :). For my GTSpecB, the tuner Matt (KiDo) said only the fuel pump needs upgrading to run E85 (and a tune obviously). And he atually recommend the DW65c. So yeah, you're all set in terms of hardware.

Awesome!
Seems like less expense and effort than running water/meth to achieve a similar result.
Since w/m is apparently difficult to tune on the stock ECU???

And a bit more dangerous than e85, when something goes wrong

Benny you're going to love e85. Injectors would be very beneficial....just be careful since your block isn't a young man anymore....

I'm all care, current tune maxes out at 16psi by request.
I'm cruising around in I or S modes mostly at 9 and 12.

Did you buy the oil at the same time, maybe the oil formula has changed

BigBADbenny, I forgot to mention that a fuel filter change is aso highly recommended after running 2-3 tanks of E85 the first time. Apparently fuel system deposits also get cleaned out. But that's only ~$30 for the Sock prefilter and about $60 for the main filter (not exactly sure about the price of the main one, haven't bought it yet).
But those are pretty small costs. And contribute to an engine/fuel system clean out.

W/M is fine. Not 'easy' but doable.

I will send you an E85 tune :) Keep the AFR's close to petrol and timing low for a good clean out tune ;)

Ben you're being robbed of all the gloriousness of E85 by not going bigger injectors and a nice aggressive tune
